Singapore Rubik's Cube Open 2010

Sunday, 21st March 2010

The Rubik's Cube, a 30 year-old puzzle game, competition was held at Orchard Central. Of the 126 participants, 91 were international players. The aim was to see who in the competition could solve the cubes in the fastest times.

The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Erno Rubik. In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by nine stickers, among six solid colours (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow).[9] A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be a solid colour. There are exactly 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (approximately forty-three quintillion) permutations (possible combinations). The current world record for a 3×3×3 Rubik's Cube was set by Erik Akkersdijk in 2008 with the time of 7.08 seconds at the Czech Open 2008.
