One Map Portal Launched

OneMap, Singapore's first intelligent map information system, was launched by Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmuga. OneMap aims to provides a reliable, timely and accurate location-based information to the public. One service offered allow parents to find out if their homes are within one or two kilometres of a certain primary school.

Organisations and individuals can now tap on OneMap's advanced web mapping technologies to create useful and value-added services within their own websites. OneMap is the first major application by a whole-of-government initiative to create an environment in which the public and private sectors and the community can collaborate and create a wide range of innovative applications using geospatial or map-based information. To put it in other words, OneMap is part of the larger "Singapore Geospatial Collaborative Environment" drive driven by both the Singapore Land Authority and the Infocomm Development Authority. This Government of Singapore linked project costed $2.2million of tax-payer money to develop and slated to provide more than just directions. It is based on geospatial (terrestrial or geographic) data belonging to the Government.
