Wednesday, 2nd November 2011

MediaCorp discontinue its Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) service, which was widely seen as the "replacement technology" for FM radio in 1999. Sadly, DAB did not gain much traction since its introduction. Technology like Internet online streaming is widely adopted.

The use of DAB services has had mixed results around the world. In, Finland, which started DAB transmission in 1997, switched off the service in 2005. Low public acceptance of DAB also led to its demise in Canada in 2010.

On the other hand, DAB listenership is high in the United Kingdom. Public demonstrations were made in 1993 in the United Kingdom. The protocol specification was finalized in 1993 and adopted by the ITU-R standardization body in 1994.
