Singapore Government Swearing-In Ceremony

Saturday, 21st May 2011

During the ceremony held in the State Room of the Istana, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore had just gone through a watershed 2011 General Election. Almost all the seats were contested, for the first time in decades. Many Singaporeans were voting also for the first time. Singapore has entered a new phase in its political development. Head of government included Prime Minister LEE Hsien Loong (since 12 August 2004); Deputy Prime Minister TEO Chee Hean (since 1 April 2009) and Deputy Prime Minister THARMAN Shanmugaratnam (since 21 May 2011); Senior Minister HENG Chee How (since 21 May 2011).

What is a watershed Election?

A watershed Election is one that changes history.... "a campaign that decides the course of politics for decades; one that is especially memorable, or that proves to be a dividing line between historical periods."
