Prime Minister Hopes For More Singapore Babies

Kong Hee Huat Chye - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong [ 李 显 龙 ] hoped "fervently" that Singaporeans would boost the city-state's stubbornly-low birth rates in the coming Year of the Dragon. Superstitious Chinese believe children born during the Year of the Dragon [ 龙 年 ], the symbol of ancient emperors, will possess courage and wisdom and bring luck to the entire family. Lee Hsien Loong himself was a dragon baby born to Singapore First Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, in 1952. He was given a name with a dragon [ 龙 ] character in it.
Man jailed a year for stealing S$32 From Mosque

Noraizam Abdullah, 40-year-old, admitted to stealing stealing S$32 from a donation box in a mosque to buy food for his family. He took the donation box at the entrance of the Darussalam Mosque at Commonwealth Avenue West. Noraizam, who has a string of previous theft offences, pleaded for leniency. The court also heard that Noraizam, who has a handicapped mother, stole the money to feed his family. He was sentenced to one year in jail.
Parliament Accepted Revised Ministers Pay

Parliament has accepted the proposals made by the Committee to Review Ministerial Salaries after a three-day debate. Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who is also Minister-in-charge of civil service, said both sides of the House (PAP and two opposition parties) have moved much closer together. 30 MPs took part in the debate. The new salary structure will be backdated to 21 May 2011. Huat Ah!
Police Officer Shot At VivoCity

An auxiliary police officer from Cisco shot himself inside a toilet cubicle on the first floor of Vivocity. It is also possible this is a case of suicide, as there are no apparent signs of foul play, and the toilet cubicle was locked from the inside. At the time of the shooting, he was attached to Citibank branch in Vivicity.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) members elected a 55-year-old female, Mdm Diana Chia Siew Fui, as their new chief for it top decision-making body, the Central Committee. Madam Chia is the first woman to lead the Singapore labour movement. She was previously from the Healthcare Services Employees Union.
The Oldest Social Worker In Singapore Died

Teresa Hsu (1898 - 2011) was Singapore’s oldest person and popular social worker. Madam Hsu passed away peacefully at home at the ripe old age of 113 and was cremated the same day. The late Teresa Hsu founded Heart to Heart Service and the Home for the Aged Sick, and her commitment to charity earned her the Public Star in 2009. She spent her most life helping the poor and needy. Ms Hsu was widely known for her unassuming manner.
Business Owner Jailed For GST Fraud

Tan Kim Teck, a 44-year old self-made businessman, was jailed for eight months. He was earlier charged with tax evasion and failing to keep proper business and accounting records. According to courts document, Mr Tan burnt his business records to destroy evidence of fraud. Tan Kim Teck was also ordered to pay a restitution (fine) of $413,880. He had filed documents to deceive by false appearance to the Inland Revenue Authority (IRAS) into undercharging him S$137,960 in tax between 2000 and 2007.
Lee Kuan Yew Has Peripheral Neuropathy

Singapore's Ex-MM (Minister Mentor) Lee Kuan Yew confirmed he is suffering from Sensory Peripheral Neuropathy, which makes his walking unsteady. The elderly statesman were ofter seen walking in a "slow motion" manner. Mr Lee said, despite of this illness, that he will continue to contribute to Singapore as long as his health permits.
Occupy Wall Street Supporter Chicken Out

Singapore Supporter "Chicken Out" as they are suppose to show up at Raffles Place in support of the "Occupy Wall Street" protests in New York. 75 indicating they would attend the event of the Singapore movement which had 3,000 followers on Facebook. But as at 2pm, none of the 75 showed up.

One of Singapore's richest man, Mr Wee Cho Yaw (owner of UOB), was the recipients of this year's highest National Day Awards - the Distinguished Service Order (Darjah Utama Bakti Cemerlang in Malay). The annual awards recognise those who have made outstanding contributions in community work in Singapore. Along with Mr Wee another 3,010 individuals are being honoured in a lower category.
