Pulau Ubin Residents Get Micro-Grid Electricity

Residents and businesses on Pulau Ubin have signed up for electricity from a micro-grid being test-bedded on the island. The micro-grid will allow residents and businesses to enjoy cheaper, cleaner and more reliable electricity supply, as opposed to relying on diesel generators. It is part of a test-bed by the Energy Market Authority to assess the impact of intermittent energy sources, such as solar, on grid operations.


Fire Knocked Out Bukit Panjang Telephone Exchange

A number of services in northern Singapore were knocked out after a huge fire burn out SingTel's Bukit Panjang Telephone Exchange building early afternoon. Investigations showed that 33 fibre cables were damaged by the fire and more than 100 mobile base stations were impacted. More than 60,000 fixed broadband lines, around 30,000 mioTV customers, around 30,000 voice lines were also affected.


Singapore Lightning Information Online

The Meteorological Service of Singapore has launched a new real-time Lightning Information on the Internet. The lightning information service will be available on the MSS website via a link from the National Environment Agency (NEA) website at http://online.weather.gov.sg/lightning/. Singapore has one of the highest occurrences of lightning activity in the world. Lightning strikes are a potential safety hazard for anyone engaging in outdoor activities in Singapore.


RSAF 20 Years In Perth

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) celebrated 20 years of flight training at its flying training detachment in Pearce, Western Australia. The RSAF Chief of Air Force, Major-General (MG) Hoo Cher Mou, and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Brown visited the Australian base, located about 50 km north of Perth, to mark the occasion. The combined parade was also attended by local community leaders.


Working Poor cannot make ends meet

A study by National University of Singapore (NUS) Social Work Department has shown that the working poor in Singapore are not getting enough pay to make ends meet. The survey also showed that those who need money want to work and that there are jobs available for them. It has been reported that there are more than 300,000 Singaporeans and Permanent Residents who earn less than S$1,500 a month, excluding employer CPF contributions, despite working full-time.

Myanmar's democracy icon and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in Singapore to deliver a lecture on leadership at the Singapore Management University (SMU). Respect is something the 600-strong crowd of students, academics and business leaders clearly had for Suu Kyi. She said "Leadership is not about being popular all the time. Sometimes, leadership means accepting that what you do may be unpopular and may well lose you the next elections. But if you truly believe that what you are doing is good for your country, you must be prepared to lose the next elections."
