RSAF Jets With New Missiles

Singapore will buy 120 missiles at the cost of about SGD $300 Million (USD $246 million). The sale will include 100 AIM-120C7 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and 20 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II All Up Round Missiles. These missiles can be carried on any Singapore's 24 F-15SGs Jets for counter-piracy and counterterrorism roles.


Singapore To Scrap The Idea of Buying F-35B

Singapore is to buy its first squadron of vertical take-offs jets, which consisted of 12 planes, of Lockheed Martin's F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) (see update below). The F-35 is the world's most expensive conventional weapon system but Lockheed promises the F-35 will be four times more effective than contemporary fighters in air-to-ground combat, three times more effective in reconnaissance and suppression, with better range, improved support, and equal costs. Singapore showed interest in acquring the F-35 since 2003.


RSAF New Advanced Jet Trainer Arrived At Cazaux

The first advanced trainer Alenia Aermacchi M-346 of the Republic of Singapore Air Force arrived at Cazaux Airbase in France. The M346 Advanced Jet Trainer is the replacement of old Douglas TA-4 Skyhawk.


Singapore Government May Open Up Changi Runway

Singapore may open the third runway at Changi Airport for civil aviation use. The runway, Changi Air Base East, is currently used by the military only. More airport terminals may be built on the 1,000-hectare piece of land in Changi.


M-346 Completed First Test Flight

Heron To Replace Searcher UAVs

RSAF is replacing all its IAI Searcher Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which have been in use since 1994, with the more advanced IAI Heron-1 UAV. A key feature of the new Heron UAV is its fully automatic take-off and landing capability.


RSAF Airmen To Train With Italian Air Force

Two airmen from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) left for Brindisi in Italy early this morning. RSAF and the Italian Air Force (ITAF) signed a Technical Agreement to train Singapore military personnel in Italy. The agreement sets the terms of the participation of six Singaporean trainee pilots to the ITAF flying training program in Lecce Air Base (Comune di Galatina, Provincia di Lecce, South-Eastern Italy), to obtain the Military Pilot Licence with Aermacchi MB-339A Advanced Jet Trainer at ITAF 213 Squadron (AMI 213ยบ Gruppo).


RSAF G550 Airborne Early Warning Aircraft Operational

Singapore's newly acquired Gulfstream 550 Airborne Early Warning (G550-AEW) aircraft became fully operational. The G550 aircraft uses one of the world's most advanced radar and communications systems to detect aerial threats. It has a detection range of more than 200 nautical miles. Today also see the commended the work of the 111 Squadron (RSAF Sqn 111), also known as the Jaegers, which operates the G550-AEW aircraft.


Defence Minister Visited RSAF Detachment In USA

Minister for Defence Ng Eng Hen visited the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) Peace Carvin V (PC Five) F-15SG Fighter Detachment at the Mountain Home Air Force Base (MHAFB) in Idaho yesterday in his introductory visit to the United States. The PC V detachment is home to about 180 RSAF personnel comprising pilots, weapons systems officers and ground crew. The RSAF F-15SG detachment was inaugurated in 2009.


RSAF To Expand Cazaux AJT Detachment

RSAF's Chief of Staff (Air Staff) Brigadier-General (BG) Wong Huat Sern and General Jean-Luc Crochard of the Armee de l'Air attended the ground breaking ceremony for a new two-storey building at Cazaux to house flight simulators, equipment and instructional materials, interactive classrooms and briefing rooms for the RSAF's Advanced Jet Training (AJT) detachment. The new RSAF 150 Squadron annex building is scheduled to be completed by late 2013.
