Dalhousie Obelisk

Show Photo
Dalhousie Obelisk is dedicated to Marquis Dalhousie, the Governor General of India who visited Singapore in 18 February 1850. This testimonial was designed in the form of an obelisk and constructed by John Turnbull Thomson, Governor Architect and Surveyor (1841-1853). The Dalhousie Obelisk is thought to resemble Cleopatra's Needle on the Thames Embankment in London.

But in 1885, this obelisk was considered for demolition as an obstacle to the construction of Connaught Drive. So under the order of the Governor, Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, the obelisk was carefully dismantled and removed from its foundation on 9 July 1890 and re-erected in front of Victoria Memorial Hall and Empress Place Building.
