The Evolution Garden at Singapore Botanic Garden is a 1.5-hectare area that provides a time journey through the plant kingdom from 4,400 millions years ago till today. It demonstrates past changes, from the fiery planet of antiquity to the time when life was only in the oceans, to the age of ferns, cycads and dinosaurs and to the modern world of beautiful flowering plants. How do plants evolve and adapt over time? On the entrance of the Evolution Garden, you will encounter columns of stones which are petrified tree trunks (fossilised) remains of real ancient tree. The petrified tree trunks have been completely altered and the organic matter has been replaced by Silica. Some of these fossilised tree trunks are be more than 3 metres long and 1 metre in diameter as the Fossil woods weigh a few tonnes. The Evolution Garden has the following themes: Tree of Stone; Lifeless Earth; Beginning of Life; Invasion of the Land; Great Coal Swamp; Rise of the Ferns; Age of Cycads; First Flowers; Flowering of the World; Pine Savanna and Rain Forest. Early morning would be the best time to walk Evolution Garden. Give yourself about an hour or two to walk the trail while reading its commentary.
