Fort Canning Park is located in the heart of the city yet neatly tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Fort Canning was originally known as Bukit Larangan, or "Forbidden Hill". It was later the British renamed Government Hill. The Fort was named in 1861 in the honor of Viscount Charles John Canning, the first Viceroy of India.

Fort Canning is a strategic British battleground command centre during World War II as it overlooks the Singapore Town. Many underground bunker and cannons are built here. Fort Canning was used by the Japanese army during World War II and when then continued to be used by the British army in post World War II period, and up to the 1970s by the Singapore Armed Forces.

At the heart of Fort Canning is the Fort Canning Centre, the imposing old restored military barracks, now provides a major cultural venue and residence for Singapore's modern performing arts companies, Singapore Dance Theatre and Theatreworks.
