National Library open its doors to the public on July 2005. The National Library once located at Stamford Road (built in 1960 after philanthropist Lee Kong Chian donated $375 000 towards the building) has been relocated here. The new Library will thus be designed as a unique modern state-of-the-art Library that meets the challenges of the 21st century with the power to inform, educate and entertain. The Library will serve as an ideal library with modern facilities and a unique and rich collection that nourishes the citizenry with information and knowledge that inspires discovery, exploration, adoption and learning. It has a new Drama Centre within the Library building in addition to these facilities: A research and reference library, A lending library, An Open plaza and other areas for performances, events and programmes, Exhibition hall/gallery, Gardens and terraces, Retail spaces such as café, Generous open landscape throughout the building and a Rooftop pod.
