Old Kapok Tree, Ceiba pentandra, in Botanic Gardens was planted in 1933. Commonly known the White Silk-Cotton Tree, this Kapok is nearly 80 years old, with a girth of 6.2 m and a height of 43 m. It is a large, deciduous and majestic tree that has a narrow, open, thin pagoda-shaped crown, with tiered, horizontal branches. Widely distributed in West Africa, Tropical America, India and Southeast Asia. The Kapok tree has inconspicuous flowers are up to 3 cm in size, with 4 - 5 petals. They are light yellowish, pink or white in colour with a milky smell. The fibrer around the seeds were formly used for stuffing mattresses, pillows and even life jackets. The Heritage Kapok Tree in Botanic Gardens has a very nice majestic architecture of the tree and ghostly root system as I is located on a gentle slope.
