Schering-Plough Factory in Tuas (Singapore) is a US 260 million Multi-Product Bulk Pharmaceutical Plant (MPP). Schering-Plough Multi-Product Bulk Pharmaceutical Plant houses 14 reactors and 14 hold tanks (with a capacity of about 190,000 litres), four centrifuges and three dryers. The 12,000-sqm state-of-the-art facility was completed in mid-2003 and is now fully operational. The new huge high tech MPP complex only employs 80 people. The Singapore Schering-Plough Multi-Product Bulk Pharmaceutical Plant produces Ezetimibe, the active ingredient for EzetrolŽ (marketed as ZetiaŽ in the United States), the first in a new class of cholesterol-lowering agents. The plant also produces a wide range of bulk pharmaceutical products including the active ingredients for the non-sedating antihistamine Loratadine (CLARITINŽ); Flutamide (EULEXINŽ) for the treatment of prostate cancer; and several active substances used in anti-asthma, anti-inflammatory and dermatological products. Schering Corporation was first established in the late 1800s as the U.S. subsidiary of Schering AG, a German-based pharmaceutical and chemical company. In 1971, merged with Plough Inc., a worldwide manufacturer of consumer products, to create Schering-Plough Corporation.
