Editor of Temasek Review Emeritus, www.tremeritus.com, was served a lawyer's letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for carrying allegedly defamatory remarks on his website. In the letter, Mr Lee's lawyer wrote "...alleged that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong secured or was instrumental in securing the appointment of his wife, Madam Ho Ching, as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited for nepotistic motives."


Island-wide Air Raid Siren Sounded At Around Noon

Yaw Shin Leong Expelled From Workers' Party

Singapore's opposition Workers' Party has expelled its Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang, Yaw Shin Leong on Valentine's Day 2012, amid allegations of an extramarital affair. Mr Yaw had secured a win in the last General Election.


Dr Toh Chin Chye Passed On

Singapore’s former Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister, Dr Toh Chin Chye (1921-2012), died in his sleep. In 1988 Dr Toh retired from politics and was conferred the Order of Nila Utama (First Class) in 1990. Dr Toh was educated at Raffles College and the University of London. He received a PhD in Physiology from the National Institute for Medical Research in London.


Man Caught Trying To Smuggle Another Man

A 21-year-old Malaysian man who tried to smuggle a 37-year-old Bangladeshi overstayer out of Singapore was caught at the Woodlands Checkpoint. His Malaysia-registered car, a black MPV, was seized. The Malaysian man said he was to be paid S$1,000 on completing the job.


Polytechnic Students Can Fly

Temasek Polytechnic has tied up with the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) to offer flying lessons to students. The scheme will allowed 30 of 150 students currently taking the Aviation Management & Services course an opportunity to to fly the Diamond Trainer and to obtain a PPL (Private Pilot License). Assessment criteria for will be stringent - first is pass the psychometric test (also known as compass test) held by the Republic of Singapore Air Force, then an interview with the selection board at SYFC and then must pass a full medical test at ST Aeromedical Centre.


Civil Defence Chief Suspended

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) commissioner Peter Benedict Lim Sin Pang, age 51, was removed from his position following allegations of "serious personal misconduct". Mr Lim was placed on leave from his duty and interdicted from their duties with immediate effect pending disciplinary proceedings.


CNB Director Suspended

Director of the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) Mr Ng Boon Gay, age 45, was removed from his position following allegations of “serious personal misconduct”. Boon Gay was appointed as Director CNB on 18 February 2011. He joined the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in 1991 as a Local Merit Scholar with First Class Honours in Mathematics and was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Police the following year.
