Nathan As Second Term President

Sellapan Ramanathan Nathan aka SR Nathan was sworn in for a second term of office. He and 3 other people ("Tom, Dick & Harry") had submitted their application for this S$2.5 Million a year job in the Istana. A straw poll showed that nearly 80 per cent of Singaporeans hoped for a contest. But on August 13, 2005, the Committee announced that the other three applicants had been rejected as ineligible. Nathan returned unopposed on nomination day, 17 August 2005.

Zheng He Exhibition

The Zheng He & Maritime Asia Exhibition, held at the National Library (Level 10) Victoria Street, ran for 6 months from 13 August 2005 to 10 February 2006. The Exhibition enhanced public's interest in learning about Zheng He and his influence on the maritime history of Southeast Asia. The exhibition showcased the various ports-of-call and highlight the cultural, social and political influences, which have, to some extent, contributed to Singapore's multi-cultural identity and entrepot status. This also marks 600th anniversary of Zheng He's voyages. Zheng He commanded seven great expeditions to more than 30 countries between 1405 and 1433.

Sir Sykes and Mr Wachem Honored

Sir Richard B Sykes (Rector of Imperial College London, UK) and Mr LC van Wachem (Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Royal Philips Electronics, Netherlands) was presented with the Honorary Citizen Award for their invaluable contributions to Singapore in the biomedical and business field. The Honorary Citizen Award ceremony was held at the Istana on 12 October 2004, marks the second year Singapore is conferring this honour on global talent. President SR Nathan conferred the Honorary Citizen Award.

Jack Neo Awarded the PBM

Jack Neo Chee Keong (1960 - ) became the first local film-maker to be honored with a National Day Award, the Public Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Masyarakat). The Medal is given to Mr Neo which he has rendered commendable public service in Singapore or for his achievement in the field of arts and letters, sports, the sciences, business, the professions and the labour movement.

Opening of Changi Naval Base

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) took a step towards achieving world-class status when its Changi Naval Base was opened by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. Also present were the Minister of Defence, Admiral Teo Chee Hean. This ceremony marked the culmination of more than a decade of planning and construction of a naval base that is among the most sophisticated in this region. The other two Naval Bases are located at Pulau Brani and Tuas.

RSAF F-16 Fighter Jet Crashed

A Singapore Republic Air Force (RSAF) F-16C fighter jet crashed during a routine night training mission south of Barry M. Goldwater Range Military training range in southern Arizona. The plane was piloted by 25-years old, Lieutenant Loo Kwang Han, had taken off from Luke Air Force Base with two other aircraft on a routine night training flight. About 45 minutes into the flight, communication with the missing aircraft was lost. Lieutenant Loo Kwang Han died in the crash.

NKF: Controversially ahead of its time, Article Published

Straits Times published an editorial "NKF: Controversially ahead of its time?" written by senior correspondent Susan Long. This article became the subject of the dispute, and eventually the lawsuit that led to the scandal. Durai and NKF challenged the first six lines of the article, which claimed that a retired contractor (who declined to be named, for fear of being sued) had 'lost it' when he was asked to install "a glass-panelled shower, a pricey German toilet bowl and a (S$1,000) gold-plated tap" in Durai's office. NKF shortly issued a letter of demand for an apology, retraction, and payment of damages from the paper's publisher, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), within 24 hours. Four days after the article's publication, NKF and Durai served a writ on Long and SPH for defamation, demanding S$3.24 million in damages. The trail was set on the 11 July 2005.

Singapore honours top talent with Honorary Citizen award

Dr Sydney Brenner (Nobel Laureate) and Mr Pasquale Pistorio (CEO of STMicroelectronics) were conferred Singapore's highest award for global talent as recognition of their outstanding contributions to developing the biomedical and semiconductor industries in Singapore. This first Honorary Citizen award ceremony was held at the Istana on 27 October 2003. It will mark the first time Singapore is conferring such high honours on global talent. According to the government spokesperson, "Singapore must stay connected and open to the world in order to be relevant and to flourish. We have to attract the best people, with the best ideas to Singapore so that we can continue to enlarge the economic pie."

Singapore's OK Campaign

The 'Singapore's OK' (SOK) campaign was launched by NEA (National Environment Agency) to promote the widespread adoption of good hygiene and public health practices. The 'Singapore's OK' campaign is a voluntary scheme that allows all sectors of Singapore society to participate so as to show their commitment towards adopting good hygiene practices for good public health. This is in line with the emphasis of shared ownership for the environment. Within a month, the campaign was extended to cover eight categories of premises and one for the general community. One of the eight categories of premises was public toilets.
