Billions Of Dollars Vanished From The Market

It was estimated that S$18 Billion was wipe off from the Singapore stock market when the STI (Straits Times Index) nose dived four percentage points. The benchmark index plunged close below the 3,000 in its biggest one-day decline since 2008. Singapore's Politicians were again out to remind the people to brace themselves for hard landing but not to panic. Shares slump globally with trillions of US Dollars wiped off the value of global markets.


SMU Churn Out More Lawyers

The first batch of Singapore Management University (SMU) law students which comprised of 106 LLB and 17 Juris Doctor degree students graduates. This is a big jump compare to 50 years ago. SMU is Singapore's second law school admitted this pioneer intake in August 2007.


A Thousand More Botaks

More than 1,000 Botaks (people shaved their heads) set to create awareness of cancer in children. The head-shaving event at VivoCity was organised by non-profit Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF). The shaving event was started nine years ago by CCF.


ROM and ROMM Restarted

The newly-renovated Registry of Marriages (ROM) and Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM) resumed operations and 23 couples solemnised their marriages on the first day ofreopening. The new ROM building was renovated at a cost of about S$4.2 million.


Lee Kuan Yew Resigned

Singapore founding father Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) has resigned from the country's cabinet, ceding leadership to his son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. LKY has been sitting inside the cabinet for the last 52 years. The move comes after his political party's worst election result since 1965.


PAP Won 2011 General Election

Singapore’s incumbent PAP (People's Action Party) won the 2011 General Election. It was the 16th General Election in Singapore and the 11th since independence. The governing People's Action Party (PAP) secured their 13th consecutive term in office since 1959. PAP won all but six seats to the opposition party (Workers' Party).


President Salary Increase To Over 4 Million Dollars A Year

The President of Singapore salary, also known as the Privy Purse, is now set at SGD S$4,267,500 (USD 3.5 Million/Year) , an increase of S$890,700 from S$3,376,800 a year earlier - a 20.8% quantum jump. He also gets an entertainment allowance of S$73,000.


HSBC Women's Champions 2011

The HSBC Women's Champions is a golf tournament for professional female golfers that is part of the LPGA Tour. HSBC Women's Champions was played for the first time in 2008 at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore. The Winner for the 2011 game was Karrie Webb of Australia. She took home USD210,000 of prize money.


Radio And TV License Fees Abolished

With effect from 1st January 2011 there will no longer need to pay radio and television licence fees and those who have paid the fees will get a refund from the Government. Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said in Parliament "The ownership of TVs is no longer limited to the middle and higher income groups. Today, most households including 99 per cent of lower-income households own TVs. Second, with increasing media convergence, Singaporeans can now receive broadcast content over the internet and mobile devices which do nor attract licence fees. ... the licence fees are losing their relevance"


Grand Opening Of Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort

The Marina Bay Sands (MBS) was declared fully opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The MBS Integrated Resort (IR) had its soft launch April 2010. Revellers at the Bayfront Promenade and Event Plaza was treated to a water and light show which premiered at 8:08pm on 17 February 2011.
