HDB To Upgrade 85,000 Households

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has committed $1 billion to upgrade eight towns. The eight towns are in the Central zone like Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, Bishan, Serangoon, Kallang/Whampoa, Queenstown, Bukit Merah and Central. This upgrade plan was announced by Deputy PM and Minister for Home Affairs, Wong Kan Seng announced this at the HDB's 50th anniversary celebrations.
SIA Shutdown Flight To Europe

Singapore Airlines (SIA), which operates on average 25 flights to Europe a day, has cancelled services to cities including London and Paris. This is due to the closure of most of Europe's airspace because of a huge Icelandic volcano ash cloud. The flight disruptions will cause SIA a net loss of about US$10 million (S$13.8 million) a day.
Deputy-CEO Jailed For Cooking The Books

The 37-year-old Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of JEL Corporation (Holdings) Limited, a public listed company dealing in photographic and IT products, was sentenced to 12 months jail and fined S$100,000 for his creativity. Mr Wee Teck Han has pleaded guilty to conspired with two of his colleagues to falsify (cook) the company's accounts (books) and inflated its profits by more than S$4.2 million.
Hill-Rom Opened An R&D Centre

Hill-Rom, a leading medical technology company, has opened an expanded research and development (R&D) centre in Yishun Avenue 7. The centre is housed in the new 5,000 square feet expansion to the original 11,000 square feet manufacturing facility. The facility's initial focus was on the development of electronic componentry, such as micro-electronics and embedded software, for Hill-Rom products, all of which are integral to the technical development of new Hill-Rom beds and therapy surfaces.
Applied Materials Opened Factory

Applied Materials, United States based semiconductor maker, new factory is located in the Changi North Industrial Park. It employed 800 workers. Applied Materials HAD chosen Singapore because of its proximity its customers and suppliers. And also because of Singapore's strength as a logistics hub, its depth and its relationship with the people and the Government of Singapore.
Amazing Race Races Through Singapore

Amazing Race, an award-winning reality television game show, features 11 teams of two in a race around the world. This 2010 season where contestant visited Chile, Germany, France, Seychelles, and Penang before reaching Singapore. In Singapore, the venues included the Victoria Concert Hall, Istana Park, Sentosa, Marina Barrage and ended at the Singapore Flyer.
Elias Mall Water Supply Outage

Water supply to Elias Mall was cut due to a burst in an underground water pipe leading to the premises. Maintenance staff have been digging a few spots around the Mall to locate the leak. Business is operating as usage for the 60 shops in the building but have to many have to resort to getting their water from nearby buildings. Water was only restored 2 days later.
Boy Foot Caught In Escalator

A young boy was injured after his foot got caught in an escalator at VivoCity Mall. Helper managed to release his foot from the escalator and the boy was sent to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for treatment. According to SGH the boy had received treatment for cuts and he is a stable condition.
College Green Hostel Reopens

Opened in 1952, the pre-war terrace homes in a 5,000 sq metre estate tucked away off Dunearn Road housed University of Malaya and later, University of Singapore students till they closed in 1981. Later, they were leased out by the Singapore Land Authority as rental homes. In opening ceremony of the newly-refurbished Dunearn Road Hostels, now known as College Green Hostels, President SR Nathan remembered about hostel life which between 1952 to 1954 he had lived in one of them.
108 People Arrested For Vice

The 108 people arrested at various locations including entertainment outlets, back lanes, lodging houses, and along the roads in Geylang and Joo Chiat as well as forested areas in Woodlands. More than 200 officers participated in the massive operation which ended this morning was led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
