New China Visa Centre In Raffles Place

Singaporeans and foreign nationals can apply for China Visa a new visa centre at Royal Brothers Building in Raffles Place. According to the Chinese embassy, the new centre is setup to meet the rising demand and cut queue time for such services. However, Chinese nationals in Singapore will still go to the China Embassy in Tanglin Road for passport, work permit and other services.


Viaduct Link NUS To UTown

The new Viaduct will link the National University of Singapore (NUS) Kent Ridge campus to its 19ha, $500 million University Town (UTown), which is slated to open in phases from the Mid 2011. The 290m-long viaduct, which will span the six-lane over Ayer Rajah Expressway, will have two lanes for vehicles, a sheltered pedestrian walkway and a dedicated bicycle path. It will cost NUS about $25 million to link Kent Ridge campus with the 19ha University Town.


Portion Of Mustafa Centre Shutdown

The first storey of Mustafa Centre was ordered by subordinate court to stop business temporarily for 40 hours on its first floor. The shutdown is after the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) court order of fire hazard. This temporary closure will give the store time to review and implement more stringent means of crowd control. The Mustafa Centre, which sees up to 10,000 shoppers daily, has expanded certain areas in its premises by removing shelves so that more shoppers can move around, on top of other measures to control "human" traffic.


2 Loanshark Sidekicks Jailed

2 men were sent to prison for five years and three years for helping loansharks (unlicensed moneylenders) to harass their victims. Muhammad Harfiyan Ahjiman, 22-year old, was jailed 5 years and given 10 strokes of the cane. His 21-year old buddy, Muhammad Faizal Abdul Razak, who acted as Mr. Ahjiman lookout was jailed for 3 years with 8 strokes. They had used a hammer to smash the window panels of two HDB housing units at Hougang on 30 Nov 2009. They also sprayed painted and wrote graffiti on staircase landings as well as chained the main doors of units at Jurong West and Bukit Batok Central with padlocks.


New Kaki Bukit Industrial Premises For Sale

First East Centre is located on a 1.1 ha site that is zoned for "Business 2" with a 30-year lease. First East Centre is developed by KNG Development which comprises 80 units each with an ancillary office. Unit start from 1,800 square feet and priced at around S$360,000. The date of completion is expected in the first quarter of 2012. Property consultant Colliers International has been appointed as the exclusive marketing agent.


United Engineers Moving to AMK

United Engineers Limited (UE), a listed construction firm, will centralise most of its business operations at its new Ang Mo Kio property which they have just acquired for about S$25 million. UE will move its current headquarters at UE Square to this new new property by the end of the year. The building was owned by Motorola will be rename to UE BizHub Central after the ownership change. UE owns another property under that brand, called UE BizHub East.


F15 Jets Came Home

The 149 Squadron of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) inaugurated. 149 Squadron (F15 Squadron) will come under the Air Combat Command (ACC) which plans, controls and executes air warfare operations.The ceremony was held at the Paya Lebar Airbase. This is a significant milestone in the development of the air force's capabilities. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said in the inauguration ceremony that the F-15SGs will also play a very important role in the Singapore Armed Forces overall operations, including its ability to 'deal decisively' with future threats.


Cigarette Seller Suspended

THE Authority has suspended the licence of a tobacco retailer for repeatedly selling tobacco products to underage kids. Plainclothes inspectors from HSA (Health Sciences Authority) caught an employee working at a 7-Eleven outlet in Bugis Village, selling a packet of cigarettes to a person below 18 years.


Major-General Farquhar Exhibition

The Singapore National Library launches exhibition on Major-General William Farquhar, Singapore first resident and commandant. There are close to 70 exhibits on display which traces Major-General Farquhar's military career, his role in the history of Malacca and contributions to the development of early Singapore. The exhibition is held at the National Library Building till the 31st of August 2010.


Sri Mariamman Temple Upgraded

The Sri Mariamman Temple, built in 1827, completed its year long $3 million project to upgrade its look and facilities. Craftmen from India worked all year to restore the temple's 500 decorative statues and wall murals. Its roof was also waterproofed, and its administrative offices expanded. The Sri Mariamman Temple held a consecration ceremony to mark the occasion. Following the ceremony, it will hold a 48-day celebratory festival featuring prominent Indian performers and cultural exhibitions. The Sri Mariamman Temple's last major renovation was in 1996.
