Grand Opening Of Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort

The Marina Bay Sands (MBS) was declared fully opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The MBS Integrated Resort (IR) had its soft launch April 2010. Revellers at the Bayfront Promenade and Event Plaza was treated to a water and light show which premiered at 8:08pm on 17 February 2011.


Eric Clapton In Singapore

British guitar icon Eric Clapton sang to more than 9000 of his fans at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. During the concert, Eric hardly spoke except to thank the seated crowd, comprising a number of expatriates and VIP. One of the VIP spotted was North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s second eldest son Kim Jong-chul, 31. This is second time that young Kim has been photographed at a Clapton concert following a previous sighting in Germany in 2006.


Robert Mugabe In Singapore Again

President of Zimbabwe, Mr. Robert Mugabe, arrived in Singapore from Harare for medical treatment. Mugabe was in Singapore for a post-operative check after an operation on one of his eyes. Mugabe's health remains a closely guarded secret. The president is reportedly suffering health setbacks in his recovery after what had been initially billed as a minor medical procedure in Singapore last month. Mugabe was set to return to Zimbabwe on February 20, the day before his 87th birthday.


SYFC New Trainer Aircraft Commissioned

The Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) commissioned its fleet of a new generation trainer airplane. The Diamond DA40 (Diamond Star) is an Austrian four-seat, single engine, light aircraft constructed from composite materials. DA40 has a built-in Garmin G1000 (commonly called a “glass cockpit”) which is an integrated flight instrument system that typically composed of two display units, one serving as a primary flight display, and one as a multi-function display - found in most modern aircraft.


Staff Who Stole From M1

The High Court ordered Mr. Yeo Kay Keng, 35-year old, to pay S$2 million in damages to Telco M1 (his ex-employer). Mr Yeo, who sold M1 handsets and phone subscriptions to corporate clients, had allegedly been cooking up fake sales orders over three years. Yeo had also disclosed his spending spree. He bought a S$230,000 Porsche Sports Car and later upgrading to another S$430,000 model. He also bought a S$50,000 Patek Philippe watch and four Audemars Piguet watches that cost between S$15,000 and S$30,000 each. He had a large collection of fishes which included a S$200,000 stingray and a school of arowanas that worthed S$160,000.


Mini City On NTU Campus

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) unveiled a masterplan to transform its campus in Jurong into a mini city over the next 15 years. Electric buses and electric bikes will ply the campus roads. There will also be pedestrian walkways criss-crossing through a network of ponds and parks. A light rail system will be constructed. The in centre of the campus, there will be a snaking structure called the Campus Centre. The Campus Centre would feature cafes, shops, a pub and a cinema, all located near academic and residential facilities.


Enter Sentosa Island For A Dollar

You can now walk to Sentosa Island from VivoCity via the Sentosa boardwalk. Getting in to the island on foot is now possible and it is a fun filled experience. This S$70 million boardwalk is lined with themed gardens, shops and eateries. It is also accessible to both the elderly and the handicapped as there are travellators and a covered walkway for rainy days. To encourage more people to walk to Sentosa, the entrance fee to the island for those who enter on foot will only be S$1.


Robert Mugabe In Singapore

Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, said he was in Singapore on holiday. The 86 year old reportedly looked fit and healthy as he was addressing a group of reporters on his return to Harare. He said he and his family was having his usual end of year break in Singapore. He denied having had any emergency surgery in Malaysia. According to his spokeperson, Robert Mugabe had his "cataract" removed in Mount E.


6 Million Cards Issued

Based on the latest figures from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the number of main cards crossed the six million mark.  According to IRAS's (Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore) annual report shows about 906,000 taxpayers have assessed income of at least $30,000, which is the minimum annual income required for a card. A simple calculation works out to 6.7 cards per person.


HDB celebrates its 50th Anniversary

As Housing Development Board (HDB) celebrates its 50th anniversary in providing public housing in Singapore, it also celebrates its milestone in completing its one millionth HDB flat. At the completion ceremony of HDB's first eco-friendly initiative Treelodge@Punggol, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean and Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan presented the keys to HDB's one millionth flat to its owners, Mr Wang Wei Ji and his wife Christina Ng.
