Middleton Hospital Established

Monday, 1st November 1920

Middleton Hospital was established as a quarantine camp for the isolation, investigation and treatment of patients with dangerous infectious diseases including smallpox, plague and cholera in 1909. The Hospital was named after Dr. W.R.C. Middleton who was an elected a member of the Straits Medical Council.


First airplane to land in Singapore

Thursday, 4th December 1919

The first airplane to land in Singapore touched down at Farrer Park field (old Singapore Race Course). The plane was a three-engined Vickers Vimy piloted by Captain Ross Smith with his brother Lieutenant Keith Smith as navigator. It had two other crew members. The plane was on a pioneering flight from England (UK) to Australia. In 1911, Bristol Boxkite made a demonstration flight at the same location.


Singapore Centenary Parade

Thursday, 6th February 1919

The Singapore Centenary Parade marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of Singapore in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles. Official celebrations began with the arrival of Governor Arthur Young at the Victoria Memorial Hall at 7:30am. The highlight of the Day was a procession of 8,000 school children carrying flags and banners. The boys were headed by the Raffles Institution and started their procession from Cavenagh Road. The girls were led by the sister school, Raffles Girl's School, and started at Mackenzie Road.


Government Infectious Diseases Hospital

Tuesday, 1st July 1913

The Government Infectious Diseases Camp along Moulmein Road was renamed to Government Infectious Diseases Hospital.


First Airplane In Singapore

Thursday, 16th March 1911

The British-made Bristol Boxkite biplane was the first plane that took flight in Singapore on 16 March 1911, piloted by Mr. Joseph Christiaens. Interestingly, the plane arrived not by air, but in crates by sea, together with the pilot. It was then assembled by a squad of Royal Engineers. An airstrip or landing area had to be created for three days of demonstration flights at the Singapore Turf Club Race Course at Farrer Park. It was capable of just over 300km of flight. Passengers, one at a time, paid $50 each for the privilege of flying.


Kwong Wai Shiu Land Leased For $1 A Year

Wednesday, 22nd February 1911

A 6ha of land in Serangoon Road was leased to Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital for A Dollar A Year from the British Colonial Office. Three Clan Leaders raised about $150,000 to build a hospital to provide medical care for their clansman.


Singapore Scout Association Founded

Monday, 28th February 1910

Scouting in Singapore began with the 1st Sand’s Troop of 30 boys under the sponsorship of Young Men’s Christian Association, whose building also served as the Scout Headquarters. The Singapore Scout Association is a non-discriminatory youth movement dedicated to the development and enablement of young people in Singapore to become responsible and active citizens through the Mission of Scouting.


Infectious Diseases Camp Along Moulmein Road

In Singapore Government established a new quarantine camp along Moulmein Road and called it the Government Infectious Diseases Camp. And closed the Pauper's Hospital.


The Straits Dollar was Pegged

Friday, 26th January 1906

The value of the Straits Dollar was fixed at 2 shilings and 4 pence so as to stablised the currency.  This value remained at the same level till 1967.


Clock Tower Clock Ready

Monday, 1st January 1906

The Hall 54m Clock Tower that is towering between the Singapore Town Hall and Victoria Memorial Hall was inaugurated. The clock itself has a 4m diameter, weighs a tonne and cost $6,000. And was donated by the Straits Trading Company to the Singapore municipality.
