Hundreds Of Freshmen Marched Across College Link

A large group of University Freshmen took a symbolic walk across the College Link, the link connecting Kent Ridge Campus and UTown, in steps. It marks the start of a new academic year as well as a major milestone in the history of NUS with the completion of the state-of-the-art Education Resource Centre and dormitory blocks. The first phase of its development it houses about 1,200 undergraduates and 1,700 graduate students.
Free Entry Into Museums For One Month

For the next 31 days, there will be free entry to seven museums in August for Singaporeans and permanent residents in Singapore. In addition, the museums will be opened free of charge to all everyone (tourist and foreign talents) on National Day (9 August 2011) and Hari Raya Puasa (30 August 2011).
Tuas Power Provided Free Energy Upgrade

Energy provider Tuas Power spend about S$100,000 to sponsor five non-profit organisations to switch to more energy-efficient light bulbs. The five beneficiaries were Ren Ci Hospital, the Moral Home for the Aged Sick, the Young Men's Christian Association, the Metta Welfare Association and the Rainbow Centre - Margaret Drive School. It could save these organisations about S$57,000 in annual energy costs.
SMU Churn Out More Lawyers

The first batch of Singapore Management University (SMU) law students which comprised of 106 LLB and 17 Juris Doctor degree students graduates. This is a big jump compare to 50 years ago. SMU is Singapore's second law school admitted this pioneer intake in August 2007.
New POCC @ Changi Openned

The new POCC (Port Control Operation Centre) at Changi Naval Base was officially opened. It took three years to constructed and cost nearly S$26 million. It is equipped with a brand new "state-of-the-art" Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS).
SIA A380 Flight Aborted

A Singapore Airlines (SIA) A380 jet bound for Hong Kong turned back after technical issues cropped up in one of its four engines 20 minutes into the flight. The engine encountered "surge and high vibration" as the aircraft was ascending after take-off. The engine was then automatically shut down. The flight, SQ856 was turned back soon after take-off and touched down safely about an hour later.
Singapore Thieves' Market Squeezed

The infamous Thieves' Market Market (public fleamarket) at Sungei Road was cut by half due to the construction of the new downtown MRT Line. Vendors were seen scrambling and fighting for space to hawk their wares.
Singaporean Hurt In Desert Storm

The tour bus with over-sized tires named Desert Storm, which was carrying 34 passengers mostly Singaporeans, rolled backwards and flipped down a sand dune in Lancelin, about 130km north of Perth. At least two of the Singaporean victims are in "critical but stable" condition. According to one of the victim, it was a very horrifying experience.
A Thousand More Botaks

More than 1,000 Botaks (people shaved their heads) set to create awareness of cancer in children. The head-shaving event at VivoCity was organised by non-profit Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF). The shaving event was started nine years ago by CCF.
