Sports School Down With Mass Food Poisoning

One Hundred and Six Students at the Singapore Sports School were down with diarrhoea or stomach pain after eating at the school's canteen. Those affected experienced the illness between have since recovered. The canteen operator, ISS Catering Services Pte Ltd, at the Singapore Sports School is under investigation by The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).


Methodist Heritage Day

The Methodist Heritage Day was held at the Old School which was the former Methodist Girls’ School site at Mt Sophia. It was official opened by PM Lee Hsien Loong and Bishop Dr. Robert M. Solomon which incorporated a main Heritage Exhibition and a Heritage Fair, and a Heritage Trail by Bus. The Methodist Church's is celebrating its 125th anniversary in Singapore.


Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College

The "Singapore Command and Staff College" will be renamed the "Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College" in honour of the late Dr Goh Keng Swee. The College offer the Command and Staff Course which is attended by selected officers from the three services of the SAF, and International Officers from other countries. It trains, educates and prepares these officers for their roles as mid-level military leaders.


10K People In Nike City 10K Run

10,000 people took part in the Nike City 10K Run early this morning. This year's event was titled "SG vs KL Nike City 10K 24.10.2010". The SG vs KL Challenge where the city with the most kilometres recorded will win a US$30,000 donation from Nike for their respective charities. Runners in Singapore will raise funds for the Singapore Children's Society, while runners in Kuala Lumpur will run to earn a donation for Hope Worldwide Kuala Lumpur.


Orchard Road Rasied

A 1.4 kilometre low-lying stretch in Orchard Road from Orchard Parade Hotel to The Heeren were raised by 1 foot to protect it against flash floods. Recently it was hit by one of the worst floods in recent history when the Stamford Canal, designed to discharge excess water to the sea (now a fresh water reservoir), could not cope with two successive bursts of intense rainfall, causing rainwater to overflow onto the roads.


Navy Launches RSS Swordsman Submarine

Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) launched its second Archer-class submarine, RSS Swordsman, at the Kockums Shipyard in Karlskrona, Sweden. RSS Swordsman is one of two ex-Vaastergotland-class submarines acquired by Singapore in 2005. The other, RSS Archer, was launched in 2009. The two vessels have been retrofitted with the latest state-of-the-art Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which allows them to last six weeks underwater. The submarines will be based at Changi Naval Base (CNB).


Engine Failure Caused Apache To Crash Land

The Defence Minister, Teo Chee Hean, said that it was a defective component in an Apache helicopter from Squadron 120 that caused the pilot to do an emergency crash landing in an open field in Woodlands. The defective component was an Anti-Ice Start Bleed Valve (AISBV) that had led to a sudden loss of power and eventually shut-down of both engines during flight. The defect was caused by corrosion in the valve which occurred over time and there was no evidence that there were manufacturing defects in those valves.


Bollywood Veggies Farm's Boss In Court

Mrs Ivy Singh-Lim, Boss of Bollywood Veggies, appeared in court on charges relating to her farm along Neo Tiew Road in Kranji. She was accused of failing to engage a professional engineer to conduct the inspection of her farm. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) had sent numerous notices to her farm since April 2008. Her lawyer argued for the charges to be dropped, claiming the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) was singling Bollywood Veggies out for prosecution while other farms there were illegally operating and occupying their premises without the proper permits. Her farm was leased from the government's Singapore Land Authority (SLA) for 20 years.


President's Star Charity 2010

The President's Star Charity 2010 saw sure footed Le Parkour practitioner, celebrities, international artistes, dance enthusiasts and even Shaolin Fighter Monks wowing the audience for two-and-a-half hours at MediaCorp Television Station Studio. The charity show was capture live on High Definition and broadcasted live on Free-To-Air Channel 5 TV. The show is supposed to be a somber charity event but the telecasted show had so many unrelated commercial advertisement (from beauty products to luxury goods) in between segments.


Raffles Place Temple to be Restored

Ngee Ann Kongsi foundation, Yueh Hai Ching Temple, will commit $5 million to restore it over two years, beginning next year. Yueh Hai Ching Temple was built in 1855 at its same current location near Raffles Place. Its rooftop sculptures have dulled in colour and chipped. The temple's interior rosewood beams have all lost some of its joint. Some of its concrete wall carvings turn into powder upon touch. The temple makeover is schedule to begin after Chinese New Year in February 2011.
