More Duty-Free Liquor Allowed

Arriving travellers will have more choices to enjoy duty-free liquor. From April Fools Day 2010, the duty-free allowance for liquor will be changed to allow for an additional one litre of wine or one litre of beer in plus one litre of spirits. For example, you can buy 1 litre of XO plus another litre of Beer without having to worry about paying duties for them. Previously, the duty-free allowance is only one litre each for spirits, wine and beer.
New LNG Terminal In Jurong Island

Construction work has begun on the new $1.5 billion Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Jurong Island. The LNG terminal is set to boost Singapore's energy needs.
Mustafa Fined

Mustafa was fined $10,000 after the company pleaded guilty to illegally using its 6-storey Kallang Pudding Warehouse for retail sales. Last November, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) served a writ of summons on Mustafa for illegally converting its first two levels of its warehouse into a department store and a supermarket.
Man Jailed For Punching Another Man

Mr. Lew Sze Kai, 32-year old Sales Promoter, was thrown behind bars for eight months after he admitted to grievously hurting by hurling punches at Mr. Desmond Wee, 49-year old Photographer. Mr Wee suffered a fracture of his left orbit (orbicularis oculi is an area on the face surrounding the eye) on 7 April 2009. Mr. Lew threw a couple of punches on Mr Wee's face during an argument along a driveway between Lucky Plaza and Tangs Department Store.
One Map Portal Launched

OneMap, Singapore's first intelligent map information system, was launched by Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmuga. OneMap aims to provides a reliable, timely and accurate location-based information to the public. One service offered allow parents to find out if their homes are within one or two kilometres of a certain primary school.
HP New R&D Lab

Hewlett-Packard Singapore's new R&D lab will focus on improving the user navigation and design of its printers. Inkjet Web Solutions Global Design Centre will be up and running by early 2011. HP's researchers will look for ways to improve the company's upcoming web-enabled inkjet printers, from more intuitive touch-screen menus to allow users to select pictures from online photo galleries, to connecting the printer to networking devices with fewer mouse clicks.
Dragonflies Thrive In Urban Environment

In a recent study conducted by National Parks Board (NParks) has found that a considerable number of dragonfly species are able to thrive in an urban setting like Toa Payoh Town Park and Bishan Park. For two years, NParks combed 19 parks, nature reserves as well as about 30 water habitats that dragonflies frequent. In Toa Payoh Town Park, NParks found common species such as the Crocothemis servilia, a bright red dragonfly. While at Bishan Park, NParks found rare species like the Ceriagrion chaoi and the Pseudagrion australasiae. The NParks hope that growing of their population will also help the fight against dengue carrying mosquitoes.
Ngee Ann Kongsi donates S$8.1m to School

Ngee Ann Kongsi has made a donation of S$8.1 million to the School of Science and Technology Singapore. It to be given over next five years of S$1.62 million a year and will be used for annual scholarships and bursaries. Each scholarship is awarded for a year and is worth about $2,400 which is enough to pay for the bulk of their school fees, however recipients will foot the remaining S$600 required.
Khoo Teck Puat Hospital Opened

Residents of Yishun got a view of the new Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Yishunduring its open house. Khoo Teck Puat Hospital costed S$800 million hospital and took nearly three and half years to build. The hospital's design to reduce energy usage by installing solar panels and harnessing natural breezes to air it. There is also built a rooftop garden to reduce the heat-load.
Runner Completed 218km Run

Mr. Yong Yuen Cheng, physics teacher and NTU (Nanyang Technological University) alma mater, completed the 218km run at around 7pm. He started the day before at 8.30am. 218km is equivalent of five marathons, and Singapore's longest foot race ever. He and eight fellow runners in the 218km Run Round Singapore race to celebrate its NTU 55th anniversary and raise funds for the school's needy students. They managed to raise about $218,000 ($1,000 per km?) from this event towards student bursaries to help future generations of NTU needy students.
