Double-decker buses burnt to the ground

Six expensive double-decker buses valued at $500,000 (half a million dollars) each was burnt beyond recognition at the Ang Mo Kio Bus Depot at 3.30am.  Two fire engines and 20 fire fighters from SCDF was at the scene to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes.


Maid Leap Off Draycott 8

A Filipino maid fought with her employer then leap off eight floors from an upscale condominium Draycott 8 on Draycott Park, off Scotts Road. She died on the spot of impact. The 30-year-old maid had been working for a 47-year-old Westerner and his 45-year-old Japanese wife for just a few months.


HSBC Women's Champions 2010

The HSBC Women's Champions is a golf tournament for professional female golfers that is part of the LPGA Tour. HSBC Women's Champions was played for the first time in 2008 at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore. The Winner for the 2010 game was Ai Miyazato of Japan. She took home USD220,000 of prize money.


February 2010 was driest month

February 2010 was the driest month in 140 years, since 1869, when records of rainfall first started for Singapore. Only 6.3 millimetres of rain fell for the entire month of February 2010. The hotest day was on the 26th of the month where temperature reached 35 degrees Celsius. Climate researcher from the National University of Singapore the El Nino effect is expected to last till May 2010.


CDL To Restart Stalled South Beach Project

City Developments Limited (CDL) is aiming to start building its landmark South Beach project in Beach Road within the Singapore's Central Business District. The South Beach Project bid was won in 2007 but was shelved in late 2008, owing to high construction costs. The other reason for stalling the project was CDL two alliance partners (Dubai World and El-Ad Group) ran out of money.  CDL has since brought in new investor, the Hong Kong's Nan Fung group, under a refinancing exercise.


Japan Land new data centre in Singapore

Japan Land Ltd opened its new Jurong Data Centre at the International Business Park in Jurong East. The $215 million facility was developed by Jurong Data Centre Development Pte Ltd. The new centre in Singapore has seven floors, with a floor area of over 34,000 square metres. Of this, 18,000 square metres of data centre space across six floors can house 30 data suites with separate mechanical and engineering facilities, including generators and fuel storage tanks.


Retired CEO of Shell gets Honorary Citizenship

Singapore Government has conferred Jeroen van der Veer, age 63, the Honorary Citizen Award. President S R Nathan presented Mr Van der Veer. The award is the highest form of recognition bestowed by the Singapore government for outstanding contributions by individuals to the country's growth and development. Jeroen van der Veer retired chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell was instrumental in setting up Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex, its largest downstream investment in Asia.


ST Engineering wins RSAF maintenance contract

ST Engineering today announced that its aerospace arm, ST Aerospace, has been awarded two maintenance contracts for six years by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) for a total value of SGD $363 million. The maintenance contract is for maintaining RSAF's fleet of aircraft.


Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital 99-Years Lease Expired

Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital 99-Years lease with the old British Colonial Office had expired. The 6ha of land ownership was transferred from the defunct British Colonial Office to Singapore Land Authority (SLA). The old rental was for $1 per year and with the new owners, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital will be paying $1.4 million per year.


Genting Casino Made $3.6M On Day One

Singapore's Resort World Casino successfully opened on Chinese New Year (14 February 2009) and made 3.6 Millions Dollars on its first day of operations. The new casino draws large crowds of gamblers and casual visitors to its compound. In the first week of operations, the casino received more than 149,000 visitors. Many were Singaporeans or citizens of neighbouring Malaysia. Locals have to pay the S$ 100 (US$ 70) per day Singapore Government Levy to gamble in any Singapore Casino.
