Honorary Citizen Award on Mr Tata and Tan Sri Tsao

Singapore honored Mr Ratan N. Tata (Chairman of Tata Sons Ltd, India) and Tan Sri Frank Tsao Wen-King (Chairman of IMC Group, China) with the 2007 Honorary Citizen Award for their valuable contributions to the country. This is the fifth year Singapore is conferring the Honorary Citizen Award. President S R Nathan will confer the Honorary Citizen Award on the two recipients at a ceremony to be held at the Istana on 29 August 2008.
New Fairprice logo launched

Mr. Lee Kuan Yew launched the hip new logo of the NTUC FairPrice supermarket chain at its historic first outlet in Toa Payoh Central. He had opened it 35 years ago in the days when profiteering was rampant and food prices were painfully high. But he was all smiles when he hit a button to launch the logo and a vibrant red 'U' logo flashed on screens. Two climate-controlled trucks rolled past on cue, honking festively. Mr Lee later toured the supermarket, and lingered at a Heritage Wall of pictures and milestones. Included were black-and-white pictures of him and the Toa Payoh branch. The new-look logo mirrors that of NTUC, which carries a hallmark 'U' that puns on 'you'. So the revamped FairPrice identity 'reflects a deep-rooted relationship with the labour movement' and the promise to 'moderate the cost of living in Singapore'.
Inauguration of the RSAF's Air Combat Command

The restructuring of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) was completed with the inauguration of the Air Combat Command. Under the restructured RSAF, the five mission-oriented functional commands are: the Air Combat Command (ACC), the and the Air Power Generation Command (APGC), the Air Defence and Operations Command (ADOC), the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Command (UC), and the Participation Command (PC). The ACC is responsible for the planning, control and execution of the air battle in operations. It brings together all fighter and transport squadrons that will carry out these tasks under a single command which will be responsible for training the pilots and aircrew to think and operate in a fully integrated way.
Permanent Green To Symbolise Religious Harmony

To symbolise the harmony of different religions with nature, with one another and with the larger Singaporean community, Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong the Guest of Honour at a tree-planting ceremony together with Singapore’s religious leaders at Stamford Green. Senior religious leaders from various religions in Singapore including the Baha’i Faith, Buddhism, Christianity, De Jiao, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism and Zoroastrianism were present. Stamford Green is the gateway to Fort Canning Park and is situated right next to the National Museum of Singapore. The trees that will be planted will form a permanent landscape at Stamford Green as an enduring symbol of our history and peaceful co-existence, and a tribute to our legacy of religious harmony.
New Pilatus PC-21 Aircraft Trainers

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has entered into service twelve new Pilatus PC-21 aircraft trainers at its flying training school running the Basic Wing Course (BWC) in Pearce, Australia. The latest aircraft trainer will replace the SIAI-Marchetti S.211 which has been the RSAF's basic trainer for the last 24 years. The new aircraft trainer allows pilot trainees to build a strong foundation in flying fundamentals and makes it easier for the RSAF to better evaluate their performance. It also helps the RSAF identify those with fighter flying aptitude early.
SAF Declared 3 Day Time-Out

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) impose a three-day time-out when two servicemen died. On 11 June 2008, a RSAF Cadet Pilot Trainee collapsed during jungle orientation training (JOT) and died of heat stroke in Brunei. And on 10 June 2008, a recruit collapsed at the halfway mark of his 2km training walk at BMT Pulau Tekong.

First Batch Of Leopard Tank Arrived

The first batch of refurbished Leopard Tank arrived in Singapore and made Sungei Gedong Camp their new home. Soldiers from 48 SAR undergoing training to prepare them for the operation of the Leopard Main Battle Tanks. They will replace some of the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) SM1 (aka AMX-13) light tanks, which are more than 40 years old. The Leopard, about three times heavier than the SM1 and powerful enough to roar down highways at 72kmh and gun down targets 3km away.
Dr. Chee fined for speaking in public

Singapore Democratic Party Secretary-General, Dr. Chee Soon Juan, was fined S$5,000 for speaking in public without a permit. He had been found guilty earlier this month for addressing a crowd in Woodlands illegally in April 2006 in the run-up to the General Election. If he fails to pay up, he will have to serve five weeks in jail. Another party member, Yap Kheng Ho, was also fined S$2,000, or will be jailed 10 days in default.
Superintendent Sacked for Prison Break

Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng announced that Singapore Government has sacked the Prison Superintendent of a Whitley Road Detention Centre where an alleged extremist leader, Mas Selamat, was held. He was able escaped through a toilet window a made this infamous prison break. The sacked Prison Superintendent's deputy was demoted.
