RSAF jet in US crashes in training

A Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) F-16C fighter aircraft crashed during a training flight near the Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, in the United States. A statement from the Defence Ministry (Mindef).
COE Bidding System Revised

The COE Bidding was revised from a Close Bidding to an Open Bidding system. With open bidding, bidders could monitor via an Internet Portal that is managed by LTA. It will show the current COE prices and revise their own bid. Every month, half of the quota was allocated for open bidding and the other half for closed bidding.
Second Singapore Biathlon

Almost 1,300 men and women took part in Singapore's biggest biathlon at Sentosa, doing a 1.5km swim followed by a 10km run. Pamela CHIA, 16, and Andrew Hirst, 36, emerged winners.
Asian Aerospace 2002

The 11th Asian Aerospace 2002 (AA2002) is a 6-day event, taking place from 26 February to 3 March 2002. The first 4 days of the Singapore Airshow are exclusively for trade attendees and the final 2 weekend days are open to general public at large. Show visitors are treated to an extra 30-minute aerobatic flying display taking place at this year’s Singapore Airshow over the public weekend. This is in addition to the 60-minute aerial display.
Dr. Chee was fined for speaking at Speakers' Corner

Dr. Chee Soon Juan was fined S$3,000 for speaking at the Singapore's "Speakers' Corner" on 15 February 2002, which requires prior registration and where discussion about race and religion is prohibited. Dr. Chee was commenting about the suspension of three Muslim schoolgirls whose parents wanted them to wear headscarves in school. Dr. Chee commented that it is against the parents' personal choice to force their children not to wear headscarves. As a result of this conviction, Dr. Chee was ineligible for the 2006 general election.
MRT Service Reached Changi Airport

The first MRT, Mass Rapid Transit, service to Changi Airport started on this day. The service allow passenger to travel to the city in less than 30 minutes. This improvement in infrastructure brings tourist into the city and helps to promote the accessibility to the airport. As the train service starts from about 5:30am, it adds convenience to the people who work at Changi.
The Orchard Towers Murder

British expat Michael McCrea murdered his friends Kho Nai Guan and Susie Lan in his Orchard Towers apartment. The bodies were found in an abandoned car at Orchard Towers.
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Gazetted

Sungei Buloh was officially gazetted as a nature reserve. Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve was officially renamed as Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to better reflect its status. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve was also recognised as a site of international importance for migratory birds with Wetlands International presenting the reserve a certificate to mark its formal entry into the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network, which include Australia's Kakadu National Park, China's Mai Po and Japan's Yatsu Tidal Flats.
World Toilet Summit

The Inaugural World Toilet Summit 2001 was held from 19 - 21 November 2001 at the Singapore Expo. Hosted by the Restrooms Association of Singapore, the purpose of the summit was to promote an in-depth global discussion on the issue of toilets. The idea for the summit originated from the Asia Pacific Symposium organised by the Japan Toilet Association since the year 1985.
Singapore Economy in Recession

The economic recession is a long and deep one that will last at least six to nine months, but may possibly stretch over 18 to 24 months, Prime Minister GOH Chok Tong warned last night at an election rally in Jurong. About 89,900 people were jobless, according to the Manpower Ministry (MOM) labour estimates for the fourth quarter of 2001. The total number of workers retrenched in 2001 was 25,600, more than double the 11,624 laid off in 2000. Six in 10 of the retrenched workers came from the goods-producing industries, while the rest were from the services-producing industries. Singapore's unemployment rate rose to 4.7 per cent last December, the highest in 15 years. MOM said that the overall unemployment rate exceeded the 4.4 per cent recorded in December 1998 during the Asian financial crisis.
