Trainee Pilots Landed In Seletar Air Base

2 Cessna 172H aircraft piloted by Singapore Air Defence Command (SADC) pilot trainees landed at Royal Air Force Seletar (RAF Seletar). This marked the transfer of the fortnight-old Singapore Armed Forces Flying Training School to Seletar from its temporary premises at Maju Camp and the birth of military flight training in Singapore. SADC's formed the first flying unit called Falcon Squadron.
SAF Flying Training School Formed

The SAF Flying Training School was setup at Maju Camp while waiting for the British Forces to release RAF Seletar. 33 out of the 500 applicants that responded to the first recruitment drive were selected. These 33 cadets Basic Military Training at Maju Camp. Then to SAFTI for officer training. Together with 4 commissioned officer to formed the first batch of FTS pilot trainees. At FTS, they underwent air grading and further selection for Basic Flying Course at RAF Leeming UK, advanced training at RAF Valley and type-traing on Hawker Hunter at RAF Chivenor.
JTC Incorporated

JTC Corporation was formally incorporated.
POSB Increased Interest Rate to 4% Per Year

POSB raised its interest rate payable to depositors from 3% to 4% per year. This incentives introduced by the Singapore Government attracted another 23,000 accounts to be opened to create a total of 280,000 depositors. Total sums deposited in 1968 was S$22.8 million.
Third Singapore Grand Prix
Monday, 15th April 1968
The Singapore Grand Prix coincided with the country’s 1968 General Election. The race was won by an Australian, Garrie Cooper in the Elfin 600 and was followed closely by Jan Bussell with his Brabham BT15. Steve Holland was third in this Lotus 47.
PAP Won First Singapore General Election

The first general election for Parliament after independence was held on 13 Apr 1968. There are 23 registered political parties. PAP won all 58 seats and for the first time, there was a one party rule in Singapore. The 1968 General Election, which is boycotted by Barisan Sosialis.
Singapore Indian Education Trust

The Singapore Indian Education Trust (SIET) is an Indian community trust fund supporting the education of local Indians, particularly those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. It was set up by trade unionist Govindasamy Kandasamy. The trust provides bursaries and interest free loans for studies up to tertiary level. Special study awards are also available, mainly for tertiary education in key universities.
First Batch of National Service Men

The first batch of 900 National Service men were enlisted into Third Singapore Infantry Regiment (3SIR) and Fourth Singapore Infantry Regiment 4 SIR at Taman Jurong Camp.
Two RAF Crew Rescued Off Jurong

The two flying officers, crew of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Hawker Hunter bomber plane, who ejected before the plane crashed into the sea about a mile off Jurong were rescued and air lifted to RAF Changi Hospital.
Singapore Dollars Issued

The issue of the first Singapore Dollar. The currency note issued today was the orchid series, the Vanda Miss Joaquim being the national flower. Nine denominations were issued from 1967 to 1976. The highest value note was $10,000 which was depicted by the Aranda Majulah and had the Istana in the background. The first series of coins was introduced in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 dollar. Except for the bronze 1 cent, these coins were struck in cupro-nickel.
