King George VI proclaimed in Singapore

Saturday, 12th December 1936

King George VI was ceremonially proclaimed at noon in Singapore as George the Sixth, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland, and the British Dominions beyond the seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. The Proclamation was read by the Governor Sir Shenton Thomas, and interpreted in Malay, Tamil and Mandarin. A short prayer was read by the Bishop of Singapore. The ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Services, members of the consular body in Singapore, and high Government officials, as well as representatives of the various racial and religious communities in Singapore.


RAF Jubilee Celebrations Over The Padang

Airplane from Royal Air Force (RAF) did multiple fly past at the Padang. This display is part of the celebration of King George V Silver Jubilee (25 years of rule).


Rickshaw Pullers went on Strike

Tuesday, 19th February 1935

About 6,000 rickshaw puller protest in a strike against the increase of rent by the rickshaw owners.


Luxury monoplane flies in from Africa

Saturday, 9th December 1933

Imperial Airways' Armstrong Whitworth AW15 Atalantas Monoplane flew to Singapore's Seletar Air Base from Central Africa for the first time this day. It could fly at 130 km/h. It was described as the fastest and most luxurious aircraft produced for the tropical region. Passengers could walk about and enjoy their refreshments on board.


Singapore Turf Club Moved To Bukit Timah

The Singapore Turf Club (STC) got its name to reflect its racing activities. As the racing fever caught on, the facilities at Farrer Park had become inadequate. In 1927, the STC sold Farrer Park land to the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) and purchased part of a Bukit Timah rubber estate. The new course at Bukit Timah was opened on 15 April 1933. Amazingly, it was only in 1960 that members of the public were allowed to attend races which, before then, were restricted to members and owners.


Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Opened

Monday, 2nd May 1932

Tanjong Pagar Station (Keppel Road Station) was opened to rail traffic. In the 1920's plans were made to build a new terminus in Keppel Road and this was completed in 1932. The 8 miles 52 chains deviation line from Bukit Timah to Keppel Road.


Mount Emily swimming pool Opened

Saturday, 10th January 1931

Mount Emily swimming pool was the first public pool in Singapore. It was also the first pool in Singapore that used fresh water instead of seawater. It was located along Upper Wilkie Road, where Mount Emily Park is today. Converted from a municipal reservoir. It used chlorination to keep the pool water clean and clear.


ABC Was Established

Thursday, 1st January 1931

The Archipelago Brewery Company (ABC) opened its first commercial brewery in Alexandra Road. ABC was started by Brauerei Beck & Co., a German brewery, which started bottling Anchor Beer.


Charles Kingsford Smith Stopover At Seletar

Wednesday, 15th October 1930

Charles Edward Kingsford made a scheduled stopover in Singapore in his Southern Cross Junior, Avro 616 Avian IVA. Upon his arrival, he was met by RAF Squadron Leader Gerry Livock. Charles Edward Kingsford was flying from England to Australia.


First Commerical Flight Landed in Singapore

Tuesday, 11th February 1930

A Commercial flight landed for the first time in Seletar Aerodrome, Singapore's first civil airport. RAF Seletar Station (Military) share the same airfield with the Seletar Aerodrome
