A Singaporean 7 Summits feat

Singaporean adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow became the first person in South-east Asia to complete the Seven Summits, after scaling Vinson Massif, Antarctica’s highest peak. The Seven Summits involved scaling the highest peaks in Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, Antarctica, and North and South America.


Singapore Airlines SQ006 Crashed

At 15:17 UTC, 23:17 Taipei local time, Singapore Airlines Boeing 747 took off from the wrong runway in Taipei during a typhoon, destroying the aircraft and killing 83 of the 179 occupants. Singapore Airlines Flight 006 (SIA SQ6) was a scheduled flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Los Angeles International Airport via Chiang Kai-Shek Airport (now Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport) in Taiwan. SQ006 was the first fatal crash of a Singapore Airlines aircraft. The Boeing 747-400 aircraft, registration 9V-SPK, was delivered to Singapore Airlines on 21 January 1997.


SMU opened officially for business

The Singapore Management University (SMU) opened officially for business with a grand Inaugural Opening Convocation Ceremony in Singapore. Held under the skies in an open field, the ceremony was conducted in arguably, the largest air-conditioned marquee erected in Singapore for such an event.


Twenty More F-16D For RSAF

The Singapore Government revealed that it was ordering another twenty F-16D Block 52 under Peace Carvin IV (PC4). The new F-16 will be equipped with the extended spine to accommodate an extensive ECM suite. Deliveries of the aircraft will commence at the end of 2003. The aircraft are powered by the Pratt & Whitney F100-229 engine. All aircraft were received before the end of 2004.


Singapore Airlines Cup won by Local Horse

A local horse named Ouzo surprised punters and racing fans when he beat a star-studded field of thoroughbreds from the United States, Britain, Argentina, Hong Kong, Ireland and New Zealand to win the inaugural S$3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup. The champion horse was trained by Malcolm Thwaites and ridden by Saimee Jumaat.


World's largest walk in Singapore

The New Paper Big Walk won the honour of being the world's largest walk in the Guinness Book of Records. Its 10th anniversary walk attracted a record 77,500 participants at the National Stadium where the event began. The organisers were Singapore Press Holdings, the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Amateur Athletic Association.


National Library To Be Torn Down

The Minister for National Development, Mah Bow Tan, announced in Parliament that the National Library building would have to go as planned. According to Mah, the authorities proceed with the URA's plan for preserving the Civic District's ambience and being more people-friendly.


Asian Aerospace 2000

The 10th Asian Aerospace 2000 (AA2000) is a 6-day event, taking place from 22 February 2000. The first 4 days of the Singapore Airshow are exclusively for trade attendees and the final 2 weekend days are open to general public at large. Asian Aerospace 2000 was one of the first major air shows of the new millennium. The show highlight was the six-aircraft RSAF Black Knights A-4SU aerobatics team.


SMU Officially Incorporated

SMU or Singapore Management University was officially incorporated.  SMU is Singapore's first private university that is funded by the Singapore Government.


Singapore Antarctica Expedition Reached South Pole

The first ever Singapore expedition to Antarctica reached the South Pole on New Year's Eve 1999 after 57 days of sledding. They travelled nearly 1200 kilometers from Horseshoe Valley just north of Patriot Hills. The Singapore Antarctica Expedition Team comprised eight members, seven men and one woman, led by Dr. Khoo Swee Chiow.
