Malaysia - Singapore Points of Agreement of 1990 (POA) is an agreement between the two country over the issue of the future of railway land owned by the Malaysian government through Malayan Railways (Keretapi Tanah Melayu or KTM) in Singapore. It was signed by Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Kuan Yew and Finance Minister of Malaysia Tun Daim Zanuddin on behalf of their respective countries.

Air Force new logo featuring the lion head

Clean and Green Week Launched

In 1990, the government launched a week-long programme (from 4 to 10 November) to get Singaporeans to appreciate their surrounding more. The Clean and Green Week (CGW) is a week-long campaign that runs in November each year. It is administered by the Education & Partnership Department, National Environment Agency (NEA). It aims to promote awareness and appreciation for a clean and green environment.

SGH brings back Class C wards

Class C wards would be available again at the SGH - Singapore General Hospital. SGH reintroduce 157 Class C beds for subsidised patients. As in all other hospitals, charges would be heavily subsidised by the government – from 75 per cent to 85 per cent. The move was in response to public concern about a possible shortage of such wards for lower-income earners.

RMAF finishes probe on alleged intrusion

RMAF (Royal Malaysian Air Force) said an RSAF helicopter which was in the area on 10 July 1990 was operating with the knowledge and consent of Malaysia. The aircraft was taking part in defence exercise. RSAF aircraft always seek proper clearance, says Malaysian commandant.

Singapore denial of alleged intrusion

Singapore reiterates denial of alleged intrusion. A statement was issued in response to reports in the Malaysian press which claimed that three RSAF helicopters violated Malaysian airspace when it tried to land in Gelang Patah in Johor recently.

The villagers in Gelang Patah, Johor, claimed that an RSAF helicopter was operating without the knowledge and consent of Malaysia. This incident have angered many Malaysian.

Elephants Sighted On Tekong

Three wild Asian elephants (Elephas Maximus) were spotted on Pulau Tekong. Apparently, the runaway elephants had swum 1.5km across the Johor Straits to reach the island. The three wild elephants had apparently swum 1.5 km. across the Johor Straits to reach Pulau Tekong. They were probably dislocated from their natural habitat in the jungles of eastern Johor by logging and forest-clearing activities. On the morning of 7 June 1990, two of the elephants, both males of about 2.3 m. tall were finally recaptured. The third male elephant, about 2 m. tall was caught later in the afternoon. By the evening of 9 June 1990, the elephants were loaded onto lorries and were taken back to Malaysia.

Smoke-Free Week

A smoke-free week was also held from 24 May to 31 May 1990. The slogan for the campaign was "Growing up without tobacco".
