PAP Won 1992 By-Election

Saturday, 19th December 1992

Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong hold this by election to secure another fresh mandate after the 1991 General Election. The by election was won by PAP with 73% votes. Therefore made it possible for Mr. Teo Chee Hean to replace Mr Lim Chee Onn.


PAP Won 1991 General Election

Singapore’s incumbent PAP (People’s Action Party) won the 1991 General Election. It was the 7th General Election in Singapore since independence. This election oversaw the unprecedented PAP loss of four Constituencies - Hougang, Nee Soon Central, Bukit Gombak on top of Potong Pasir which the People's Action Party had failed to recover ever since it was lost in the 1984 general election.


Goh Chok Tong became Prime Minster

A new chapter opened in Singapore's modern history Goh Chok Tong became the second Prime Minster of Singapore when he took over the office from Lee Kuan Yew who resigned after having been Prime Minster since 1959.

Singapore’s incumbent PAP (People’s Action Party) won the 1988 General Election. It was the 6th General Election in Singapore since independence.


Marxist Plot Exposed

Thursday, 21st May 1987

Sixteen persons around Singapore were arrested by the Singapore Secuirty Department (a political police) and were immediately imprisoned in the Whitley Road Detention Centre. Among the 16 arrested, 10 belonged directly to militant Catholic movements for social justice and human rights. The arrests of the activists was followed by five days of silence. It was only on the 26th of May that the voluminous communique of the Minister of Home Affairs was published.


Teh Cheang Wan Committed Suicide

Sunday, 14th December 1986

Teh Cheang Wan was found dead at his home at No. 14 Bukit Tunggal Road near Chancery Lane on 14 December 1986. His suicide was due to an overdose of amytal barbiturate, compelled probably by investigations for corruption prior to his death. Teh was elected as Member of Parliament for Geylang West constituency on January 1979 and continued to head this constituency until December 1984. He was the Minister for National Development since 1979.


Alex Josey Died

Wednesday, 15th October 1986

Alex Josey, age 75, died at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and his ashes were placed at Singapore Casket in Lavender Street, Singapore. Alex Josey, a journalist Singapore and public relations officer to Lee Kwan Yew (LKY), gained prominents in Singapore for writing LKY's biography between 1959 and 1978 period.


PAP Won 1984 General Election

Saturday, 22nd December 1984

Singapore’s incumbent PAP (People’s Action Party) won the 1984 General Election. It was the 5th General Election in Singapore since independence. PM Lee' Kuan Yew's son Lee Hsien Loong made his debut, while PAP stalwarts Dr Goh Keng Swee and Ong Pang Boon stepped down. Teh Cheang Wan of PAP would was under investigation for corruption did not stand for this 1984 election. Workers Party (WP) retained, with an increased majority, its sole Anson seat of leader J. B. Jeyaretnam while Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) made its first in-road into Parliament with the victory of Chiam See Tong in Potong Pasir.


Lim Hock Siew Allowed To Leave Pulau Tekong

Tuesday, 7th September 1982

Dr. Lim Hock Siew, a polical detainee, was allowed to leave Pulau Tekong on conditon that was not to particpate in political activity. Dr. Lim had categorically stated to Singapore Internal Security Department (ISD) officers that on returning to Singapore island, he would concentrate on his medical practice. Another condition stipulates that he will have to stay in a stipulated address and not allow to leave Singapore with prior written permission of the ISD Director. In all, Dr. Lim was detained for 19 years.
