Singapore Navy Launches RSS Archer Submarine

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean officiated at the launch ceremony of the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) first Archer-class submarine, RSS Archer, at the Kockums Shipyard in Karlskrona, Sweden. RSS Archer is one of two ex-Vaastergotland-class submarines acquired by Singapore in 2005. The submarines will be based at Changi Naval Base (CNB).

Dr Ng Eng Hen, the Minister for Education, annouced the establishment of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). According to Dr. Ng, it is an exciting initiative in the educational landscape which serves to enhance upgrading opportunities for polytechnic graduates to meet the changing demands of the economy today and in the future. SIT will be responsible for planning, managing and implementing degree programmes offered by renowned overseas universities in partnership with the 5 polytechnics in Singapore - Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic. First Taoist library opens in Singapore

But the San Qing Gong Taoist Library is its first in Singapore, and its 3,000 volumes of religious texts - often abstract and mellifluous in nature - will surely provide enough hours of study for disciples of the Tao. About half of the texts in San Qing Gong Taoist Library were donated from private collections, and from local and Chinese schools, including Sichuan University and Xiamen University. The other half were purchased. The San Qing Gong Taoist Library is part of the new Taoist College offering a diploma programme in Taoist studies.
Drive to recruit teachers

A fake classroom set up opposite Raffles Place MRT station greeted workers during their lunch breaks. The "classroom" were part of the Ministry of Education's (MOE) four-day drive to recruit mid-career teachers. MOE (Ministry of Education) used to hold recruitment seminars at hotels for mid-career entrants to the teaching force. But time round, MOE is probably out to looking out for interested applicants that may be leaving their currently industry due to the slow down in the economy and mid-career professionals consider joining teaching force.
40,000 to get vouchers

About 40,000 children who are currently attending school, will receive the Labour Movement's Back to School vouchers. The vouchers which can be used to stock up on school neccessities such as assessment books and stationery at the Labour Movement's Back to School Fair located at three venues this weekend. The beneficiaries are also able to enjoy services like eye check ups and hair cuts for free while there. Vendors at the Back to School Fair include Bata Singapore, Popular Bookstore and Spectacle Hut, among others and some offer discounts of up to 80 per cent for those with vouchers.
First city reservoir opens

The Marina Barrage has created Marina Reservoir, the 15th reservoir here and the first one in the heart of the city - the most densely built-up part of the island. This reservoir and two other new ones will raise the portion of the country's land area used for water catchment from half to two-thirds. The idea of damming the mouth of the Marina Channel to create a freshwater lake came from Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in 1987, when he was prime minister. That was the year the massive clean-up of the Singapore River was completed, and fish had returned to it.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called for a measured response to the ongoing global financial crisis, cautioning against an over-reaction that might cause more alarm and uncertainty. He urged Financial authorities to keep in close contact. PM Lee stressed that it is important to engage the international financial institutions, which have the resources and knowledge to help governments manage this crisis.
China Free trade pact signed

The landmark free trade agreement (FTA) between China and Singapore, which is the Chinese government's first with an Asian country, will eliminate tariffs for 85 per cent of Singapore's exports to China from January 2009. An additional 10 per cent of exports, or 95 per cent of Singapore's exports to China, will be duty-free from 2010 onwards. The Singapore exports covered by the FTA, which include such items as instant coffee, aviation kerosene and ornamental fish, have a total trade value of over $18 billion. As part of the China-Singapore FTA , Singapore will lift tariffs for all Chinese exports to Singapore. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loon and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao signed the FTA in Beijing.
Singapore government to guarantee banks

Singapore government sets aside SGD $150 billion to guarantee all Singdollar and foreign currency deposits of individual & non-bank customers in licensed banks, finance companies and credit co-operatives. For the guarantee to be called, two things have to happen: a bank has to fail, and at the same time its assets must be worth so little there is not even enough to repay its depositors. Singapore government has assured that its banking system continues to be sound and resilient, but it said precautionary action must be taken to avoid an erosion of the banks' deposit base.
Honorary Citizen Award on Mr Tata and Tan Sri Tsao

Singapore honored Mr Ratan N. Tata (Chairman of Tata Sons Ltd, India) and Tan Sri Frank Tsao Wen-King (Chairman of IMC Group, China) with the 2007 Honorary Citizen Award for their valuable contributions to the country. This is the fifth year Singapore is conferring the Honorary Citizen Award. President S R Nathan will confer the Honorary Citizen Award on the two recipients at a ceremony to be held at the Istana on 29 August 2008.
