Permanent Green To Symbolise Religious Harmony

To symbolise the harmony of different religions with nature, with one another and with the larger Singaporean community, Senior Minister Mr Goh Chok Tong the Guest of Honour at a tree-planting ceremony together with Singapore’s religious leaders at Stamford Green. Senior religious leaders from various religions in Singapore including the Baha’i Faith, Buddhism, Christianity, De Jiao, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism and Zoroastrianism were present. Stamford Green is the gateway to Fort Canning Park and is situated right next to the National Museum of Singapore. The trees that will be planted will form a permanent landscape at Stamford Green as an enduring symbol of our history and peaceful co-existence, and a tribute to our legacy of religious harmony.
CPF Interest Rate Pegged

The CPF (Central Provident Fund) interest rate for savings in the Special, Medisave and Retirement Accounts (SMRA) has been pegged to the 12-month average yield of the 10-year Singapore Government Security (10YSGS) plus 1%. The average yield of the 10YSGS over one year plus 1% worked out to be about 3.40% a year. To help CPF members adjust to the floating SMRA rate, the Government will maintain the 4% floor rate for two years, from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2009.
Singapore Purchase 12 More F-15SG

Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) exercised the option to purchase eight more F-15SG fighters as part of the original contract signed in 2005. Along with this buy, an additional order for four F-15SGs was made, bringing the total number of F-15SGs purchased to 24.
Honorary Citizen Award on Mr Raymond and Dr Pierer

Singapore honered Mr Lee R. Raymond (Retired Chairman of Exxon Mobil Corporation, USA) and Dr Heinrich von Pierer (Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Siemens AG, Germany) with the 2006 Honorary Citizen Award for their valuable contributions to Singapore. This is the fourth year Singapore is conferring the Honorary Citizen Award. President S R Nathan conferred the Honorary Citizen Award that was held at the Istana on 1 March 2007.
Honorary Citizen Award on Dr Kanai and Dr Brown

Dr Tsutomu Kanai, Chairman of Hitachi Ltd, Japan) and Dr Robert A Brown (President of Boston University, USA) with the Honorary Citizen Award for their valuable contributions to Singapore in the electronics and education fields. The Honorary Citizen Award is the highest form of recognition given by the Singapore Government to global talent for outstanding contributions towards the country's growth and development. It is conferred on those who have made a significant impact in the areas of business, science and technology, information communications, education, health, arts and culture, sports, tourism, community services or security. President S. R. Nathan will confer the Honorary Citizen Award on Dr Tsutomu Kanai and Dr Robert A Brown at a ceremony to be held at the Istana on 17 Jan 2006.
Singapore Purchase 12 New F-15SG

MINDEF announced that the Boeing F-15SG Strike Eagle had won the contract over the Rafale. The RSAF embarked on its Next Generation Fighter (NGF) programme to replace the aging A-4SU Super Skyhawks. The original list of competitors was shortlisted to the final two - Dassault Rafale and the F-15SG Strike Eagle.
Sir Sykes and Mr Wachem Honored

Sir Richard B Sykes (Rector of Imperial College London, UK) and Mr LC van Wachem (Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Royal Philips Electronics, Netherlands) was presented with the Honorary Citizen Award for their invaluable contributions to Singapore in the biomedical and business field. The Honorary Citizen Award ceremony was held at the Istana on 12 October 2004, marks the second year Singapore is conferring this honour on global talent. President SR Nathan conferred the Honorary Citizen Award.
Singapore honours top talent with Honorary Citizen award

Dr Sydney Brenner (Nobel Laureate) and Mr Pasquale Pistorio (CEO of STMicroelectronics) were conferred Singapore's highest award for global talent as recognition of their outstanding contributions to developing the biomedical and semiconductor industries in Singapore. This first Honorary Citizen award ceremony was held at the Istana on 27 October 2003. It will mark the first time Singapore is conferring such high honours on global talent. According to the government spokesperson, "Singapore must stay connected and open to the world in order to be relevant and to flourish. We have to attract the best people, with the best ideas to Singapore so that we can continue to enlarge the economic pie."
New National Library Project Started

Dr. Lee Seng Gee repeated history when the Lee Foundation he chaired gave S$60 million to the National Library Board. On 15th Aug 2003, Dr. Lee, the son of Mr. Lee Kong Chian, the the foundation stone for the New National Library Project exactly 50 years after his father did the same.
Singapore's OK Campaign

The 'Singapore's OK' (SOK) campaign was launched by NEA (National Environment Agency) to promote the widespread adoption of good hygiene and public health practices. The 'Singapore's OK' campaign is a voluntary scheme that allows all sectors of Singapore society to participate so as to show their commitment towards adopting good hygiene practices for good public health. This is in line with the emphasis of shared ownership for the environment. Within a month, the campaign was extended to cover eight categories of premises and one for the general community. One of the eight categories of premises was public toilets.
