ACCS Executives Jailed For Fraud

Victor Tan Hor Peow, founder and former chief executive of Accord Customer Care Solutions (ACCS) was sentenced to four years and three months in prison for his role in an elaborate scam to falsely boost the company's income by millions of dollars and cheat its customer, Nokia Singapore (mobile-phone manufacturer) for fictitious repair services. Tan had pleaded guilty to 21 charges for cheating Nokia, fraud and false financial reporting. The ACCS's former general manager, Damien Ang, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for similar charges. ACCS' former financial chief, Yip Hwai Chong Yip, who was jailed four years and four months.


The Kallang River Murder

Pulau Tekong Robbers Get Jail & Cane

THE three armed robbers who set off a massive manhunt in March when they landed on Pulau Tekong, were all jailed for seven years on Thursday and ordered to be caned 12 strokes. Mohamad Hassan Awang (26-year old Malaysian), Moh Gunawan Hendro (25-year old Indonesia), and Herman, (23-year old Indonesian) have committed two robberies and fled Malaysia on 18 March 2004. They stole a motorised sampan and headed for Batam, Indonesia, but they were pursued by Malaysian police and that made them change course. They landed on Pulau Tekong, which is used for military training, at about 8.45am, split up and took cover in the forested area. Alerted by Malaysian police, more than 1,200 Singapore policemen and soldiers combed the island. They found Gunawan hiding in the bushes the very next day. A day later, Hassan and Herman were arrested.


Armed Robbers In Tekong

The Singapore Police was informed by the Royal Malaysia Police at about 08:45am that they were pursuing three men on board a motorised sampan and the sampan had landed at Pulau Tekong. The men are suspected to have earlier committed armed robbery in Johor. The Singapore Armed Forces and the Singapore Police Force are jointly conducting a search for the three persons on the island. Security measures have also been stepped up on the island. About 700 soldiers and policemen are combing Pulau Tekong for three armed robbers. All training on the island has been temporarily suspended to facilitate the search operations. All three were caught and were charged with illegal entry and possession of firearms.


The Orchard Towers Murder

British expat Michael McCrea murdered his friends Kho Nai Guan and Susie Lan in his Orchard Towers apartment. The bodies were found in an abandoned car at Orchard Towers.


Brother Of PUB Deputy Chief-Executive Jailed

58-year-old Chui Fook Thim pleaded guilty to helping his brother, former PUB Deputy CEO Choy Hon Tim, flee abroad to evade the law. For that, Mr. Chui was sentenced to a 6-month jail term, becoming the first in Singapore to be convicted of such an offence.


Body Parts Murderer Hanged

John Martin Scripps, age 36, became the first Westerner to be hanged in Singapore for murder and only the second for any offence. Known as the Body Parts Murder, British national John Martin killed a South African Gerard George Lowe at River View Hotel. The body was dismembered and dumped at the Singapore River.


PUB Deputy Chief-Executive Go To Jail

Suspended PUB Deputy CEO, Choy Hon Tim (age 58), was thrown into the jail for 14 years for receiving over $13-million of bribes paid. Senior District Judge Richard Magnus passed the maximum sentence, following the prosecutor's recommendations. The prosecutor said choy, as a high-profile civil servant, had disgraced the administration which had entrusted him to serve the public. Choy had pleaded guilty yesterday to five counts of criminal conspiracy and corruption.


Flor Contemplacion Hanged

Flor R. Contemplacion, a Filipina domestic worker, was executed for murder. Her execution severely strained relations between Singapore and the Philippines and caused many Filipinos to vent their frustration at their own government and the Singaporean government over the helplessness, abuse, and mental stresses that many Filipino overseas workers face around the world.
