Singapore Guards Formed
Tuesday, 1st July 1980
The Singapore Guards are best distinguished by their superior physical fitness, mental dexterity, discipline and tenacity. Guards are primarily an elite Infantry brigade.
A unique and essential part of Guards training is in fact done with helicopters. In heli-rappelling, the Guardsmen drop down from airborne helicopters using a rope in "shock troops" fashion.
Another fundamental aspect of Guards training is cliff rappelling. The most daunting of these is the Australian rappelling where the Guardsmen charge down a steep incline. To prepare them for rappelling, whether it is cliff rappelling, heli-rappelling or the Australian rappelling.
All Guardsmen are required to go through a confidence jump known as the Omega Jump. There is no equipment needed; all one does is to jump off a height of about 6 metres.
