First Vertical Marathon

Sunday, 3rd May 1987

The first vertical marathon in Singapore saw 130 men and 50 women took part in the race up 1,336 steps to reach the top of the 73 storey Westin Stamford, the world's tallest hotel at the time. Winners of the inaugural event, Kenneth Kang and Helen Gilbey, clocked the fastest times of 7 min 20 sec and 9 min 4 sec respectively. The event managed to raise S$20,000 for the Community Chest of Singapore.


RSAF Helicopter Crashed In Brunei

Sunday, 25th January 1987

An RSAF helicopter with eight serviceman had crashed in bad weather. Five servicemen died. They are Lieutenant Ng Soon Hup, Lieutenant Seow Toh Guan, Lieutenant Wee Tong Leong, Staff Sergeant Goh Kim Loong and Corporal Ramiya Mohan. It was flying from Lakium Camp to Brunei International Airport at Bandar Seri Begawan when the accident happened. Lakium Camp is m the Temburong district and is 26 km south-east of the Brunei capital.


Marina Mandarin Opened

Wednesday, 14th January 1987

Marina Mandarin, a five-star hotel, was opened today.  Marina Mandarin has a beautiful view of the Singapore skyline and Marina Bay.


CPF Minimum Sum Scheme Introduced

Thursday, 1st January 1987

The Minimum Sum Scheme was introduced to help CPF members set aside sufficient savings to support a basic standard of living during retirement. When the scheme was first started, members were required to set aside a sum of $30,000 in their Retirement Account when they turned 55 years old. The Minimum Sum amount was progressively raised.
