Shortage of Punk-Sai-Chua

Shoppers at Singapore largest chain of supermarket, NTUC FairPrice, had messy situation on their hands. Quite a number of their outlets ran out of Punk-Sai-Chua (toilet rolls). That may have caused consumer to revert back to the old ways of cleaning themselves after they finish "doing-their-business" - with running water and fingers. The supermarket erected signs in affected stores informing shoppers that there was a "temporary shortage" because of a "delivery issue". According to the company spokesperson, that there an internal delivery glitch caused several stores to receive limited and intermittent stock from its distribution centre.
Woman Union Chief

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) members elected a 55-year-old female, Mdm Diana Chia Siew Fui, as their new chief for it top decision-making body, the Central Committee. Madam Chia is the first woman to lead the Singapore labour movement. She was previously from the Healthcare Services Employees Union.
Ex-NTUC Club Supervisor Jailed

Miss Kwok Hong Leng, a former Accounts Supervisor of NTUC Club branch in Choa Chu Kang Centre, has been sent to 2 years jail for criminal breach of trust. Between 2006 and 2008, she would periodically dip her hand into a jackpot sales kitty and took between S$1,000 and S$7,000. In all, she misappropriated almost S$160,000.
New Fairprice logo launched

Mr. Lee Kuan Yew launched the hip new logo of the NTUC FairPrice supermarket chain at its historic first outlet in Toa Payoh Central. He had opened it 35 years ago in the days when profiteering was rampant and food prices were painfully high. But he was all smiles when he hit a button to launch the logo and a vibrant red 'U' logo flashed on screens. Two climate-controlled trucks rolled past on cue, honking festively. Mr Lee later toured the supermarket, and lingered at a Heritage Wall of pictures and milestones. Included were black-and-white pictures of him and the Toa Payoh branch. The new-look logo mirrors that of NTUC, which carries a hallmark 'U' that puns on 'you'. So the revamped FairPrice identity 'reflects a deep-rooted relationship with the labour movement' and the promise to 'moderate the cost of living in Singapore'.
NTUC Open First Cooperative Supermarket

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) launched a supermarket co-operative called NTUC Welcome (Fairprice) in Toa Payoh. The then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was there to officially declare the store opened. This was a significant indication of the strong support from the government.
PM opens Union House

The Trade Union House was opened this evening in Shenton Way. The location of the union house on such a prime piece of land was in recognition of the important role played by the trade unions in nation building. The opening ceremony was performed by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew – himself fulfilling an election pledge in 1959 – before his party swept to power with massive union support. Tributes were paid to the Secretary General of NTUC Devan Nair by unionists and Mr Lee.
