Tony Tan Elected As President

Dr Tony Tan was elected Singapore's seventh "Popularly Elected" President, winning by a very slim 0.3% margin. He was one of the Four Tans contesting for this elite appointment. Tony only managed to secured 35.19% of total valid votes. Dr Tan Cheng Bock received 34.85% of the valid votes. Mr Tan Jee Say got 25.04% and the last in the pack was Mr Tan Kin Lian who managed to get less than 5% cent of the votes. The last Tan lose his election deposit of S$48,000 for failing to earn at least 12.5% of the votes. On top of his deposit, spent an estimated S$70,000 on his election campaign, which according tom him, the money coming mostly from donors.


In his winning speech, he pledged to work for all Singaporeans. And in his words, "Thanks for being so patient and for all your support."
