Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital 99-Years Lease Expired

Monday, 22nd February 2010

Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital 99-Years lease with the old British Colonial Office had expired. The 6ha of land ownership was transferred from the defunct British Colonial Office to Singapore Land Authority (SLA). The old rental was for $1 per year and with the new owners, Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital will be paying $1.4 million per year.

Kwong Wai Shiu was run as a voluntary welfare organisation. It's yearly operating cost of $12 million was met mainly by public donations and patient's fees. Ministry Of Health has agreed to provided a $1 million a year subsidy to the hospital so that they can meet its new annual rent of $1.4 million a year. Also the hospital has 50 beds, but only 70 per cent are occupied. One of the reason, is that Kwong Wai Shiu's three in-house doctors are not enough to meet demand. It hopes to hire eight more doctors by June, and gradually increase the number of beds to 150.
