DPM Lee made private visit to Taiwan
Saturday, 10th July 2004
Singapore Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Lee Hsien Loong made a private visit to Taiwan from 10-13 July 2004. The visit provoked strong reactions from China. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson expressed "strong dissatisfaction" with the visit and protested that DPM visit to Taiwan was contrary to Singapore's 'One China' policy. But according to DPM, 2 years after Singapore established diplomatic relations with China, in 1992, Lee (already a DPM) visited Taiwan. And the recent second visit to Taiwan does not contradict Singapore's 'One China' policy.
