Victoria Concert Hall Closed
Sunday, 25th July 2010
The 105-year-old Victoria Concert Hall had its final Gala Closing Concert. The venue will shut its doors for three years for major refurbishments. Completed in 1905 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria, the Victoria Memorial Hall was renamed the Victoria Concert Hall in 1980 when it became the home of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO).
Renowned organist Margaret Chen opened the concert with a rendition of JS Bach's monumental organ work, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, followed by performances from the Singapore Symphony Children's Choir, violinist Lynnette Seah and harpist Gulnara Mashurova, as well as the T'ang Quartet. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lan Shui presented the grand finale at the Concert, with the choral version of the famed 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, featuring also the combined forces of the Singapore Symphony Chorus, Singapore Bible College Chorale and The Philharmonic Chamber Chorus.
