Teh Cheang Wan Committed Suicide

Teh Cheang Wan was found dead at his home at No. 14 Bukit Tunggal Road near Chancery Lane on 14 December 1986. His suicide was due to an overdose of amytal barbiturate, compelled probably by investigations for corruption prior to his death. Teh was elected as Member of Parliament for Geylang West constituency on January 1979 and continued to head this constituency until December 1984. He was the Minister for National Development since 1979.
Teh Cheang Wan (1928 – 1986) was an architect who was in charge of the Housing Development Board as Minister for National Development of Singapore. He served as the minister between 1979 to 1984. was investigated for accepting 2 bribes totalling $1 million from Hock Tat Development Pte Ltd and Ho Yeow Koon of Keck Seng Pte Ltd in 1981 and 1982 respectively. Hock Tat Development had paid Teh a gratification of $500,000 after he helped the company to retain a piece of land that was earmarked for acquisition by the Government. Ho Yeow Koon had also given a gratification of $500,000 to Teh for helping to buy over a piece of State land for private development.
