Retired CEO of Shell gets Honorary Citizenship

Singapore Government has conferred Jeroen van der Veer, age 63, the Honorary Citizen Award. President S R Nathan presented Mr Van der Veer. The award is the highest form of recognition bestowed by the Singapore government for outstanding contributions by individuals to the country's growth and development. Jeroen van der Veer retired chief executive of Royal Dutch Shell was instrumental in setting up Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex, its largest downstream investment in Asia.
The title of Honorary Citizen is a national award conferred by the Singapore government. Honorary Citizen is the highest form of national recognition for a non-Singaporean. It is conferred for life, including the right to live and work in Singapore for themselves as well as their immediate dependent family members. However, unlike regular Singapore citizenship, Honorary Citizens neither have voting rights, nor obligations to fulfill National Service.
