Government Announces Revised Vehicle Quota System

Friday, 12th March 2010

A new formula will be used to determine the vehicle quota (or the COE). Under the new methodology, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will recycle the COE quota from the actual vehicle de-registrations in the most recent 6-month period back into the system. This eliminates the need to make any corrections due to any under- or over-estimation.

Currently there are about 1 milion car registered in Singapore and the allowable growth rate of 1.5 percent. The new Singapore's Vehicle Quota System will be implemented in April 2010 as announced by Transport Minister Raymond Lim in Parliament. With the changes implemented, the number of COEs is likely to be reduced which in turn means car prices in Singapore will go up.
