Self-Rule Delegation Arrived In London

Monday, 23rd April 1956

First round of 'Merdeka' Talks starts, with Mr. David Marshall leading a 12-men all-party delegation which include opposition party leader, Mr. Lee Kwan Yew, to London to demand internal self-government of Singapore by 1957.

The other 10 in the Singapore Team:


  1. Mr. Lim Yew Hock (Minister for Labour and Social Welfare),

  2. Mr. A.J. Braga (Minister for Health),

  3. Encik Abdul Hamid bin Haji Jumat (Minister for Local Government Lands and Housing),

  4. Mr. J.M. Jumabhoy (Minister for Commerce and Industry).

  5. Mr. Wong Foo Nam (Alliance Party Leader),

  6. Mr. Lim Choon Mong (Liberal Socialist Party Leader),

  7. Mr. Lim Koon Teck (Liberal-Socialist Party),

  8. Mr William Tan (Liberal-Socialist Party),

  9. Mr. Lim Cher Kheng (Liberal-Socialist Party),

  10. and Mr. Lim Chin Siong (Peoples Action Party).


Mr. L.C. Goh was delegation assistant secretary who was there to document the entire proceedings.

The objective for the team is to not to secure full independence but 75-percent self government with complete self government after five years.
