Singapore’s incumbent PAP (People’s Action Party) won the 1984 General Election. It was the 5th General Election in Singapore since independence. PM Lee' Kuan Yew's son Lee Hsien Loong made his debut, while PAP stalwarts Dr Goh Keng Swee and Ong Pang Boon stepped down. Teh Cheang Wan of PAP would was under investigation for corruption did not stand for this 1984 election. Workers Party (WP) retained, with an increased majority, its sole Anson seat of leader J. B. Jeyaretnam while Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) made its first in-road into Parliament with the victory of Chiam See Tong in Potong Pasir.
J.B. Jeyaretnam Won Anson By-Election

Three candidates stood in the by-election: Pang Kim Hin of the Peoples' Action Party (PAP), J.B. Jeyaretnam of the Worker's Party (WP) and Harbans Singh of the United People's Front (UPF). The by-election was won (51.9%) by the leader of the WP, J.B. Jeyaretnam, defeated (47.1%) the candidate of the governing PAP Pang Kim Hin. UPF had on 1% of the votes. The by-election marked the first occasion since Singapore's independence in which a PAP candidate was defeated in an election for a seat in Parliament.

In 1976 General Election, PAP defeated all six opposition parties and two Independents, and won a total of 69 seats. 22 candidates from Workers' Party contested the Election but did not win any seats.

The second general election for the Legislative Assembly was a lively and closely-fought affair, with several new political parties joining the fray. Unlike previous elections, voters were automatically registered, expanding the electorate to around 300,000.The SPP was soundly defeated in the election, winning only four seats. The newly-formed, left-leaning Labour Front was the biggest winner with ten seats was led by David Marshall. Labour Front formed a coalition government with the UMNO-MCA Alliance, which won three seats. Another new party, the leftist People's Action Party (PAP) led by Lee Kuan Yew, won three seats.
