Singapore table-tennis stars Li Jiawei called it a day and retiring back to home in Beijing, China. China-born Li became a Singapore citizen at the age of 18 years under the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme and in her hay days was ranked as high as world number three. Over the years, she has collected nearly $1.5 million in performance incentives from Singapore Government via Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) located in Toa Payoh Stadium.

City Harvest Church Founder Charged

City Harvest Church (CHC) founder Kong Hee and five other CHC members were charged in court for alleged misuse of church funds. Kong, 47, faced three charges for committing criminal breach of trust as an agent of CHC and for allegedly misappropriating about $24 million from CHC's building funds for unauthorised use. His right hand man, Tan Ye Peng, 39, faced ten charges. A church board member, John Lam Leng Hung, 44, faced three charges. The church finance manager Sharon Tan Shao Yuen, 37 faced seven charges. Serina Wee, 35, chruch ex-finance chief and Chew Eng Han, 52, church ex-investment manager faces ten charges each. Each charge carries the maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a fine. The court has allowed Kong Hee to travel overseas for pastoral purposes. His bail was set at S$1 million.

One Of Facebook Founder Takes Up Residency

Eduardo Saverin, one of the founders of Facebook.com, took up a more tax-friendly residency status in Singapore. Mr. Saverin was living in Singapore since 2010 and plans to remain here "indefinitely". He was born to a wealthy family in Brazil and gained American citizenship at the age of 17 in 1998. He then renounced his American citizenship after holding it for twelve years.


SAF Jeep Turn Turtle In Training Area

A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) full-time National Service man, 3SG Tan Mou Sheng, dies after the Army Scout Jeep he was travelling with turn turtle in rough terrain. The training incident at Marsiling training area at 6:50am. 3SG Tan sitting in back seat of a scout jeep as part of an exercise when the driver lost control of the vehicle and the jeep overturned. He was found pinned under the vehicle. The three other soldiers in the jeep, including the driver, managed to escape without injury.


Ms. Gillard At The Istana

Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard is on an official visit to Singapore. She was given a ceremonial welcome at the Istana this morning. Also present was Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. After the ceremony, Ms Gillard met Singapore's Acting President Mr J Y Pillay. Ms. Gillard is in Singapore to hold security and trade talks with her Singapore counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong. Ms. Gillard reassured that the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) would be allowed continued access to training facilities in Oakey in Queensland, Pearce in Western Australia and Tamworth in Victoria.


Boating Accident Claimed Two Lives

Two boats collided in waters off Penjuru Terminal at the mouth of Jurong River. After the collision, a pleasure craft carrying 10 men, sunk killing two men. These men were all on a weekend fishing trip to southern islands of Singapore.


Profitable Plots Shamed

Two Britons, Timothy Nicholas Goldring (58-year-old) and John Andrew Nordmann (53-year-old) along with his Singaporean wife (44-year-old) were directors of investment firm Profitable Plots Pte Ltd (UEN:200502453D) of Prince Edward Road. They were charged with conspiring to cheat investors of US$2.4 million.


Singapore Guards Boss Replaced

Colonel Nelson Yau, 44-year-old Chief Guards Officer, was asked to retire from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for personal reasons. In his place former MINDEF public affairs director, Colonel Desmond Tan, 41, took over Colonel Nelson Yau. The hand over parade was held at Bedok Camp.
