Punggol East By Election

PM Lee announced that the by-election for Punggol East will be held on 26 Jan 2013. Mr Lee said even though he has been busy with national issues, he has decided to hold a by-election to give Punggol East residents their own MP in Parliament, before returning back to refocus on national issues. It was rumored that PAP Activists were stockpiling plywood that is mainly used for election posters ahead of the announcements. The By-Election was eventually won by the opposition, Workers Party, with a deciding 60% majority.
COE For Small Cars Is Above $92k

Certificate of Entitlement (COE) for small cars hit another all-time high to close at S$92,100. The highest on record since COE was introduced in 1990. So a cheap 1.6litre Korean import should cost about $130,000 (USD105,000) to put it on the road. Singapore would be one of the most expensive place on earth to own a car, as it would cost a family about $2,000 (USD1,600) per month to have one.
First Woman Speaker Of Parliament

Minister of State Halimah Yacob to be elected as Speaker of Parliament. She is Singapore's first woman Speaker and will fill the post vacated by former Member of Parliament, Mr Michael Palmer, who stepped down due to an extramarital affair.
Over 2 Million Dollars For A Public Housing Apartment

An executive condominium (EC) penthouse from HDB (Housing Development Board) public housing project was sold at a record price of S$2.05 million. A spokesman for the CityLife Tampines housing project said the sale was made within the second hour after the show flat was opened for public viewing. The unit with a huge roof top deck and about 2,800 sq ft of living space was sold to a young twenty something couple.
Change In Credit Card Usage Rules

PAP MP Embarrassed PAP

Michael Palmer, MP, resigned from PAP to avoid further shaming ruling Peoples' Action Party, PAP. MP is also Punggol East MP, Member of Parliament, said he was resigning to avoid "further embarrassment" to PAP for "improper relationship" with a People's Association (PA) staff member in his constituency. He is also Singapore's Speaker of Parliament.
RSAF New Advanced Jet Trainer Arrived At Cazaux

The first advanced trainer Alenia Aermacchi M-346 of the Republic of Singapore Air Force arrived at Cazaux Airbase in France. The M346 Advanced Jet Trainer is the replacement of old Douglas TA-4 Skyhawk.

UK Prince William and his wife Catherine, aka Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, unveiled the first plane jet engine to be produced by Rolls-Royce at its new factory in Seletar, Singapore. The royal couple introduced the Trent 900 jet which powers the Airbus A380.
Pastor Steven Yang Jailed For Lying

A short jail term for Pastor Steven Yang Suan Piau of Eternal Life Baptist Church, after he we found guilty of lying and provide misleading information to an immigration officer at Woodlands Checkpoint. Pastor Yang's lawyer questioned if the Judge had placed previous sentencing precedents "on an altar and obsessively worshipped them?" He also drew similarities to the recent case of Dr Woffles Wu, a high profiled plastic surgeon, who was fined S$1,000 for giving false information to the police about his speeding offences.
