Strong Wind Blew Over The Island

Extremely strong southwesterly wind blew over the Singapore, creating havoc to many part of the city state in early morning. According to Singapore Meteorological Service, they recorded the wind of more than 100km/hr Sumatra squall in some part of Singapore. The highest wind speed of 103.7km/h recorded near West Coast highway. Trees were up rooted with the wind and heavy tropical rain. Debris was blown all island which caused massive traffic jam during morning rush hour.


Old Blakang Mati Army barracks converted into hotel

Former military barracks (6 blocks), football field (bus parking) and parade square on Sentosa, previously known as Pulau Blakang Mati (Behind The Walking Dead Island), will be converted into swanky hotel accommodation by Far East Organization (FEO). It was converted in 2005 into a tourism academy by Temasek Polytechnic but the academy was abandoned in 2011. FEO won the bid over three other submissions for the 60-year leasehold hotel site at Artillery Avenue from the Sentosa Development Corporation. The organisation will pay S$32 million up front for the piece land, which is about 4.5 Hectare site with a permissible gross floor area of up to 387,500 sq ft, and a guaranteed sum (S$3.7million/year or 10% of the total annual gross revenue, whichever is higher) every year to Sentosa Development Corp, starting from next year up until the 60-year lease expires. The hotel would be named The Outpost and will integrate two hotels (Movenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa and Amara Sanctuary Resort) with 700 rooms, set for completion in 2018.


Pulau Ubin Residents Get Micro-Grid Electricity

Residents and businesses on Pulau Ubin have signed up for electricity from a micro-grid being test-bedded on the island. The micro-grid will allow residents and businesses to enjoy cheaper, cleaner and more reliable electricity supply, as opposed to relying on diesel generators. It is part of a test-bed by the Energy Market Authority to assess the impact of intermittent energy sources, such as solar, on grid operations.


Fire Knocked Out Bukit Panjang Telephone Exchange

A number of services in northern Singapore were knocked out after a huge fire burn out SingTel's Bukit Panjang Telephone Exchange building early afternoon. Investigations showed that 33 fibre cables were damaged by the fire and more than 100 mobile base stations were impacted. More than 60,000 fixed broadband lines, around 30,000 mioTV customers, around 30,000 voice lines were also affected.


Singapore Lightning Information Online

The Meteorological Service of Singapore has launched a new real-time Lightning Information on the Internet. The lightning information service will be available on the MSS website via a link from the National Environment Agency (NEA) website at http://online.weather.gov.sg/lightning/. Singapore has one of the highest occurrences of lightning activity in the world. Lightning strikes are a potential safety hazard for anyone engaging in outdoor activities in Singapore.


RSAF 20 Years In Perth

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) celebrated 20 years of flight training at its flying training detachment in Pearce, Western Australia. The RSAF Chief of Air Force, Major-General (MG) Hoo Cher Mou, and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Brown visited the Australian base, located about 50 km north of Perth, to mark the occasion. The combined parade was also attended by local community leaders.


Sebastian Vettel Won Singapore Race With Boos

Sebastian Vettel brings boos on himself with arrogant remarks after winning the Singapore Grand Prix at Marina Bay Street Circuit. The German has won seven of the 13 races this season, but has been on the receiving end of booing from spectators on the winners' podium.


Aung San Suu Kyi In Town

Myanmar's democracy icon and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in Singapore to deliver a lecture on leadership at the Singapore Management University (SMU). Respect is something the 600-strong crowd of students, academics and business leaders clearly had for Suu Kyi. She said "Leadership is not about being popular all the time. Sometimes, leadership means accepting that what you do may be unpopular and may well lose you the next elections. But if you truly believe that what you are doing is good for your country, you must be prepared to lose the next elections."


40 Ferraris drove in from KL

Public Officers Have To Declare Their Visits To Casino

The Singapore Government is tightening rules on civil servants visiting casinos. Public officers who visit casinos in Singapore frequently or buy the annual casino entry levy will soon need to declare these actions. Recently, a former assistant director at the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), Edwin Yeo, was charged with criminal breach of trust involving S$1.7 million.
